They asked people to work from home, can they lay people off when they are at home?

I was let go via phone. I was a GM employee at WTC. Package will be sent in the mail.
They've given themselves 2 weeks to do these layoffs.
Even if they have to hold off today because of weather, they still have a week and a half to do what they're going to do.
I also know for a fact that employees are being let go via phone/skype
I got let go on Monday over the phone while working from home. I'm still waiting for my info/package that was coming on the mail. Not sure what I'm suppose to do with my laptop.

I was told that everything is delayed a day-so rest easy for today (or have another stress filled day like me)
They can terminate you over the Phone and via Skype. You will be informed of your benefits and severance etc... They will send pre-paid envelope so that you can send back your badge and computer. You will not get any of the severance until they receive all signed documents and the computer. All access to GM systems will be immediately terminated.

They can not let the direct employees go over the phone. They need computers, badges and phones. Unless you are contract, because it is not the responsibility GM to acquire the items back, it is the responsibility of the contract house.
I think the person saying they got called on a Saturday was probably a contract employee because I personally know contractors that had the same thing happen. I believe there are papers to sign and items to turn in as a salary employee. That being said I wouldn’t feel like you’re off the hook today just because you aren’t in the office.
Don't you need to turn in your computer?
I was going out to dinner with some friends on a Saturday afternoon and got a call before going in and was told don’t bother coming in Monday . Your position has been terminated!! That was it .
