Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Active safety

Im in an active safety subgroup. 3 out 12 of us were laid off today. Active safety had cuts across the board.

Our manager has still not let us know that we are safe and cuts are over. However, we have lost a total of 6 people( 3 contracts and 3 salaried) since november. The workload is intense( before the layoffs i was usually working 10 hours a day) since the contracts were let go( i was working more than12 hours a day)

I am wondering how this group can even function with further cuts.

ADAS software weighing in.... my team & associated teams got /hammered/ today... including some major contributors. Pretty tough to understand the thought process so close to a major deadline

Hey OP. I was the one who asked if your manager knew -- thanks for the input. Thats good to know -- it seems that your manager probably found out morning of... but who knows.

I am wondering too how we move forward from here, how we pick up the pieces, still meet deadlines. It's insane

Hey OP, did your manager know who was being let go? or were they just as surprised as your team?

OP here.

My manager doesnt know if layoffs are complete in our group. Has every group been informed that layoffs have ended for their specific group? FYI- we have an interim EGM, who is covering for our group while our orignal EGM is on sick leave.

Ps- he did inform us to work from home tomorrow

They can't displace salaried folks in these kinds of numbers, without first eliminating contractors. It's not about cost effectiveness, it's about procedure. An order of precedence. Contractors go first, salaried second, then back fill with contractors again.

Hypothetically, if they got their buyout numbers for salary candidates, they wouldn't have let go of the contractors to get at the salaried anyways. That's not to say the layoffs wouldn't be done, only it would have eliminated a lot of the work around they must go through now.

How is this cost effective?

Many groups will fall into this category. After a month or two, after all the salary folks have been displaced, they'll open up the door to contract to pick up some of the workload.

They've done this for decades. Standard operating procedure.
