Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Why no voluntary layoffs?

Why didn't GM offer voluntary layoffs thorough the company? I know at least two people who wanted the severance and to move on and yet they are still here (not sure if it'll stay like that, but for now, it seems so.)

Why not offer people who want out a way out before deciding to cut people indiscriminately?

Contractors get a call or email saying don't go to work and no severance. GM people are getting a severance

I would have taken it for sure. Now I've got to wait for March for the bonus.

They should have done it for anyone in alignment with their years of service. I know tons of folks who would have left in the 3-10 yr range if they had that chance.

Nothing to do with pension liabilities. Those are there if people are still working for GM or not. They quite paying in to the pensions long enough ago that people who have them and are work are fully vested by now. So the liability is there regardless.

MANY people would have taken the package.

MANY are looking to leave even without the package. Just waiting for bonus to clear.

GM doesn't treat employees with dignity and respect, so they don't believe employees will act with dignity and respect.

They wanted to get rid of those that had pensions (long-term liabilities). Those whom worked at GM for over 12 years had pensions.
