Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

It’s all about supporting family

I thought I will stick around here until my children get out of High School here. GM is a great company to work for. I am going to leave anyway, Detroit ins’t for me and my children even though we love our neighborhood and the schools.

Did a lot of GM, I mean really lot to insource IT, worked 18 hours a day in 2013/14. Infrastructure runs today in-house, dare anyone say or question my individual contribution. Problem is the way IT is setup. Bosses are miles away in Austin and Ireland, for them the greatest guy who did everything is the guy under his nose. All managers here in Warren speak at every chance to simply make them heard, no substance. Those Dell/HP Directors mafias think guys in Warren are worthless. Some guys in Warren can leave their guys in dust if their is a fair and even field. There is a buddy system brewing in GM IT. “Chief” Architects and Mangers in Austin who have no roles do nothing all day but are safe as they can be. Go figure ...

Exactly! I moved to this part of the state years ago.. from Upnorth, and have never felt at home here.. I'm looking to move back Upnorth .. there are plenty of jobs elsewhere in the state, they are just a little harder to find. But think about it... no traffic.. no road construction.. no endless pot holes.. lower cost of living.. You're better off working for a small company in a small city, then a contractor in a big company..

I am in Chandler. The managers here are good but a lot of people are hanging out doing nothing (pingpong players, game players, coming late and leaving early, WFH). We sure need some cleanup here. I hope that they sweep the right people, though. Hard to say.

It seems like most of the people on this site are IT people ? Lots of IT people gone. Id like to move out of Michigan but I can't because of family reasons , I grew up here , it can be the best place and the worst place.

I am in Austin, managers here are bad towards us as well. The term "mafia" used by the OP is a proper one.

So true:

Bosses are miles away in Austin and Ireland, for them the greatest guy who did everything is the guy under his nose.

and it results in superfluous:

speak at every chance to simply make them heard

From Austin, we have the same issues with managers and Michigan.

My kids both blossomed as individuals once they graduated high school and got the hell out of Southeast Michigan. If you’re not from here, don’t be surprised if you never quite feel at home.

The day I tell my wife we are leaving this part of the state - regardless of the reason - she’ll have the biggest smile since our children were born.

I'm a developer here in Austin. It's no better for us being local. The problem is the managers, not us and not distance.
