Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

This was not planned years ago, obviously....

To those who claim this was likely planned years ago, do you think they would hire all the new college grads in IT and then let them go a couple years later? No, this wasn't planned years ago, this was an impulsive stunt in response to Mary having a panic attack about Tesla and electric cars. Why would GM hire so many from 2015-2018 and then turn around and can them? The traumatic shock waves from any mass layoffs ripples through communities and cities....those affected will likely never buy GM or work in the auto industry again because of what is happening and by their own choice. Who would want to experience this again? And families of those affected will likely duck out of buying any GM vehicle for decades to come. GM doesn't operate in a bubble....the people they are canning are also many of their customers.

GM Plan ? Hahahaha , Global propulsion Systems was getting remodeled and then suddenly they put a stop mid move and remodel , they switched gears stood back and said , nah let's skip this step and have a massive layoff !? My instinct says powertrain leaders had no clue of any of it because like I said the remodel stopped abruptly , someone in Detroit stopped it immediately.

GM just seems to be REALLY out of touch with what customers want.

Major business decisions like this are definitely planned well in advance. IMO GM hired all the new grads a few years back so they could be mentored for a few years by the more experienced/high salaried folks that will likely be let go next week to save costs. Very unfortunate but it's the nature of running a publicly traded company these days. Used to work at a private / not publicly traded company and they didn't have the ups and downs or layoffs like this.

GM simply doesn't make a car I am interested in, so why would I buy one? Not to mention it is much more beneficial financially to buy a slightly used car and the GM discount we get isn't enough to sweeten the deal.

Managers were told at least by late 2017 of the attrition level they wanted to achieve, and to start finding ways to downgrade a certain percentage of their "resources." Every step of this has been planned, if not the full timing of it.

I'd never buy a GM vehicle even if I don't get laid off. Feel sorry for the folks that got s---ed in by the employee discount and bought their malibus.
