Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

We Saw this coming, the company has been open so far, nothing was done in the dark

They have explained what caused this layoffs, China tariffs which they warned trump will cause a small GM (https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/jun/29/general-motors-trump-tariffs-gm-jobs), restructuring to focus on making electric cars, self driving cars and car driving services. Hell the CEO even said Zero crashes. Zero emissions. Zero congestion. We have been hearing alot being said yet we ignored it. Zero crashes means self driving cars, emissions means switch from combustion to electric and if i work in such i should hv been look for a way out or switched to electric, congestion is same, means eventually we will stop making combustion cars.

The profits are made with ICE trucks, SUVs and crossovers. The car/sedan market died some time ago. If you think BEVs are going to outsell ICEs you aren't paying attention. It will take decades, and who really wants to own an autonomous vehicle? Just call Lyft if you prefer not to drive.

People don't want to buy low quality, poorly designed vehicles that are overpriced.

Surprising.

But don't worry, the Kool Aid drinkers will bully employees into buying them, or say they're disloyal to GM and not team players.

Trump is not the reason few are buying Impala, Volt, Cruz, and LaCrosse. Vehicle buyers are making other choices.

Does “no crashes” include avoiding mentally deficient pedestrians who wear all black clothes and stand in the turn lane out in the middle of 12 Mile before dawn?

"Zero crashes. Zero emissions. Zero congestion" - Zero possibility at this ever occurs. It's wonderful to have a vision, but don't neglect the immovable objects and paths that are best left to avoid. Vision works both ways, and is a double edge sword.

When the tariffs are removed, and they will be, do not count on the company hiring back everyone they've just displaced. When GM went on their hiring binge in 2015, it was inevitable this layoff would occur. That part was certain. What was less certain, was that it would start ending 2018.

The best thing you can do is to control you. Never forget. This will occur again in GM's history, as it has over and over again. It always does. What you do about that, and their products, are your choice. Vote with your wallet.

I was a simple tech at GM , I saw this coming in July ! I asked and even applied for an electification position but was blocked by my manager. My conversation was I would like to explore this opportunity to advance only to be shot down , I was told in private by another manager that I was completely blocked and he refused to let me out of my position. Now I am out of a job! I was in IC , I wanted the job and experience , I had no clue it was going to be this deep.
