Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM was hiring too many NCHs and I new this was coming

I was hired as a NCH. About a year and a half ago I seen people from my team that literally didn't have any work to do. They were after their managers because they were not assigned to any projects. Alot of people were not doing anything and thats when i new this was never going to last. I never understood why they hired so many NCHs. Also, Marry announced the TAKE 2 program about 2 years ago. These layoffs were going to happen sooner or later.

TAKE 2 Program:

It's poor management at the CIO level. Some teams have smart/bright individuals with little work, some teams have a big load of work. Resources should shift as needed. Instead GM will fire employees where work isn't needed, or where it's slow - rather than reallocate them to teams that need head count.

The equation should be simple. Fire low performers. Allow your good employees to move around, cross pollinate, based on resource needs. Employees that have broad insight to the business is more valuable than one stuck on the same team for years. It also gets boring.

I am with you. I am also a NCH, 3 years employed, and I have been so busy and productive that I almost have no time to myself (Engineer in Warren). I also have never had the leisure time to log into facebook or go shopping on Amazon (which I have seen SO often during work hours of my colleagues) which I always ask myself -- Where do these people find the free time?! Is it just me? Perhaps. I take that type of time outside of my working hours, in the comfort of my own home.

So when I read a lot of people here complaining about NCHs being lazy and having a lot of free time, surprises me, but also doesn't surprise me -- another thing I notice is people complaining about NCHs in IT?? Why is there such backlash towards NCHs IT? Are they truly free without work? If that's the case, then GM definitely needs restructuring.

If management weren't so poor, they would have transferred work from groups where people were working 65 hours a week to groups where people were idle.

How hard is it to level out the workload???

I’m a NCH and I can say that in my case that’s not true. I have been in GM for almost 3 years and I have always had multiple projects and zero time to waste. In 3 years I have been working more than 50 hours per week only in project work leaving me to have to work even more hours for other stuff related to the company. Last year was a really busy year for my projects to a point that I worked many weeks more than 60-65 hours a week. I guess it depends on the teams/organizations.

NCH's will be the last to go. You're cheap and malleable. 6-7-8's. I work in GM Autonomous in WTC as a software engiener, I think there will be trimming there despite it being the "future" of GM.

How many NCH is too many that it cost this. Do we account for 10 percent of the white collar workforce or 5 percent.

You hire a bunch of people and then after you get the work you needed done or you find out who the top performers are you lay off the rest. It's referred to as a 'cattle call'. And what comes after a cattle call ... the slaughter. It is not an uncommon theme in business. The least reputable companies usually employ this tactic.

Marry , you want to change the culture at GM , get down on street level and meet the people and listen to what they have to say , honestly address the questions they have and same goes for the directors , be direct and don't dance around issues and genuine questions , we are smarter than that , you keep saying you have value for us and we are more than a" number" prove it! We all understand what word Smithing means so show us you're "Integrity " You want one team and to move the GM machine forward to genuine progress Prove it ! Unless your just like the rest. You came from a plant Detroit Hamtramck remember or did you forget ?show us your roots. People aren't stupid , we all know Wall Street runs the show , perhaps there's things you can't discuss or address because of that fact , who's manipulating who ? Wall Street , the government and corporate America ? All of the above. It would be great to hear what you have to say Marry because alot of folks have done a great job for GM even though difficult times.

The NCH is absolutely correct and I can attest to it. I worked with many of them on a regular basis daily that would be assigned to me for a hot second and say the same thing , I don't have alot going on at the moment can I am here to Shadow you today or for a week , month whatever. I don't personally know Marry Barra as an individual but I would highly recommend that she demonstrate some humility and take the time to personally hold all people's meetings at each and every currently open work site on the issues directly , displace all of the rumors and set things straight , she claims to value the employees then step forward and let's have that "fire side chat" after all she has nothing to loose. If she truly wants the best company then she needs to be reseptive and listen to all of you wonderfully talented people that make GM function day in day out year after year. The question is will she be brave enough to be a genuine leader ? GM is a tough bunch of people with top notch talent in my opinion , all of this coming from a guy that just lost his livley hood before Christmas. Cheers to all of you guys at GM for enduring all these miserable months , talk about integrity in my mind your all deserve a medle.

As a NCH you should be embarrassed with you writing and grammar skills. “New” vs “knew” , really?

Elevate to a minimum level of professionalism. And before you say, “I’m a programmer, spelling and grammar shouldn’t matter to me!” Just remember spelling and grammar are the BASICS. SMH.

"If you’re interested in returning to the workforce after a career break, visit reentry.swe.org to explore opportunities available with the STEM Re-entry Task Force."

THAT NEVER HAPPENS IN IT. If you take a "career break", you're pretty much done. Technologies change so fast, you can't afford a break. GM goes out of its way to promote mediocrity. I would never listen to someone who's sat on their a-- at home for a few years then wants to be on a fast-moving agile team.

If you are a NCH female or identify yourself using a hyphen or lengthy acronym, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.
