Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Good job market

They are cutting deep so the employees left should be good for a while. For the folks being let go, look on the positive side as the job market is great and plenty of jobs out there. Not like it was back in 2008/2009. Getting some advance warning (months) should of helped as hopefully you are somewhat prepared and not have made any extravagant expenditures. I’ve known many who knew nothing and were let go after buying a car or a house. Good luck to all, this is not the end of the world and you aren’t the only one going through this and won’t be the last. I do feel bad for those oldtimers who only know GM and have been there their whole career and not old enough to retire but almost there. Hopefully you made some contacts throughout all those years and have sharpened up your resumes.

Some companies hire a 3rd party agency that you can go to after you are let go that will help you with resumes, interviewing skills etc. Essentially a workshop. I had that before. Good for oldtimers that never had to do that.

Mary said she would help with my resume...how does that work...when my badge doesn’t work anymore?

Been at many companies, including GM, and that’s just how they handle contracters. It’s not a GM only thing. While I feel bad for contracters (I have been one myself) thats the name of the game and they know this (no loyalty to you). GM direct hires should at least be thankful for their severance.

Contractors finished out their day Friday without knowledge of next week. Phone call Saturday, don't come to work Monday.

This is GM at its professional grade finest. Is GM professional grade? The answer is quite clear.

And many salary folks will have 6 months of salary while trying to find another job. Contracters did not have this so be grateful for that!

Stop regurgitating the nonsense. I hope you are more intellectually aware than that.

The job market isn't as good as they are "telling" you it actually is. Good luck in finding it counter to this.
