Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

GM Austin Layoffs

The rumor in the office is that 400+ people will be let go in Austin. They are starting with Managers today – it seems that Managers do not know who’s being cut, so directors are in charge of the cuts. You will be getting five (or six months) of pay and bonus payout. If you are in Austin you know that the market is good and you should have no issues finding a good job nowadays.

The market is not good in Austin anymore. It's going to take 3-6 months if not longer to find something else.

Don't fool yourself . The greatest showman Randy Mott who months prior sent a boasting email how innovation save 2.9 BILLION . How can anyone believe such c-ap with outdated technology ? Than he and his bogus CIO' Ahmed and his right hand Michele hand select who . Lets not forget the recent and new hires who stayed .. Ahmed and Michele should have been first ...

Was laid off from GM IT center in Austin on Monday. Not quite true about the overall severance package of 5-6 months of pay and benefits. My severance was 2 weeks salary for each year of employment. Same for insurance. So I now have 2 months of salary and health benefits. Not much when a person of my age (60+) gets the boot with two years of car and mortgage payments remaining. In my group of 7 + a mgr, 4 were laid off- 3 Level 7B and 1 6B. That's a healthy chunk to that work force to let go.

The market may be good in this area for many...but I feel age will be the potential employer's preliminary deciding factor. Like key-words in a resume', may be good on paper but age will come up at some time during the HR review process. I will persevere though.

Read this morning that GM posted an $8 BILLION profit for 2018....which was due to ALL GM employee work contributions.

Tom Painter was a Dell guy (Randy's crew), so looks like there might be some level of fairness (& redemption) for those keeping the ship afloat all this time!

Austin here. I am leaving next week for a different job, and my management has told me I qualify for the bonus. I am not sure if that helps anyone here.

They used to say Austin had about 3000 people, but it's probably a few hundred less than that after the 10% layoffs last year.

Austin is a big site, so they'll probably take a big hit.

I’m a senior developer (level 7, Austin IT), and I’ve been told that I need to be in the office for a meeting on Tuesday. The meeting is for a normal task on a project - one that is usually done via phone call or Skype, so I feel that my time has come.

A couple of points from info that I’ve seen in the various threads:

  1. I understand and have read that there is language in the HR manual that says bonuses would only get paid if you’re working on the payout date. While that is true for many personnel actions, the rules generally change during mass layoffs so I wouldn’t hold firmly to those guidelines. In other words, I have a gut feeling that 2018 bonuses will be paid to those laid off.

  2. The job market is pretty good. Reallly good in some parts of the country. Don’t worry too much. The likelihood of finding another job is very high. I’ve already found a job and am moving on one way or another.

  3. Prepare as much as possible. The really smart ones should have prepared already, but there’s still time to redeem your reward points, clean up your desks, adjust w-2 withholdings, get a quick physical, etc. I would assume that you are going to be laid off until the layoffs are complete.

  4. You will be ok. Getting laid off is nerve wracking, but know that it’s not you or your fault. You will rebound and you will find another job. Perhaps it will be a time to relax, reflect and recharge. But you will be ok.

Good luck to all.

How many people are in Austin?

Lol. Does it even make logical sense that they need to get rid of “4K” people all across GM, and 400 of those people come from Austin Innovation Centers?

Why are you guys always starting c-ap rumors? At least make it believable.

I’d volunteer to be part of the 50% if it’s true, especially if they let us have bonus and 401k. Not being fully vested is the only reason I’m still here... I probably would have left after my first year

Culture s---s, projects s---, no innovation, old mentalities stuck in their ways, change management process is trash.

So they’re going to fire people who they just hired? Yeah makes sense.

Rumor is wrong. You can read the terms of severance under teamgm benefits on Socrates- it is 2 weeks of pay per year worked for the company with a MAX of 6 months (I.e. what you get if you have worked for GM for 12 years)

So far a-- go, no one knows.
