Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Timing is perfect

I am about to jet – there was some talk about timing in other threads, anyhow, calendar is perfect this year. 3/1 is a Friday and if you give your 2wk notice on 2/15, to stay longer than 2wks, you work past 3/1 and your benefits carry over the entire month. This means you should be able to figure out if they will lay you off, if you are in the pool… Also, you get the bonus on the 28th. Some people are leaving already, the better the skills the higher likelihood of the resource jumping. It’ll continue. Top performers are bailing, cannot blame them, nobody likes uncertainty. Finally big thumbs down to Barra, she’s gonna tank the thing, my observation only so take it with a grain of salt – I know many people who believe in her, I am not keen at all…

Mary DGAF, fool. She's been CEO long enough. she ain't gonna be CEO much longer. 5 years is more than enough time. Most likely, after the layoffs, there will be a big stir again, the plants will shutter, then Mary will "resign in shame", taking her lovely golden parachute with her, and leaving one of her cronies in charge to carry on her mission. She'll move on to some other corporation, join their board for a few years, and she'll be fine.

Then GM will put out another public statement saying how the "mistakes of the past will not repeat" and how much they "value their workforce, and we promise we'll bring jobs back soon". Then we'll forget again in 1-2 months, because we have other priorities, paving the way for them to do it again in 5 years, and maybe reopen one plant in the US just to keep the drones placated....lather, rinse, repeat.

Not really how it works. Your two-week notification is a courtesy to your employer, not any type of agreement that you will I'm fact be working those two weeks. Your employer can say, "thanks but no thanks, please turn in your company property and leave today" in which case they don't pay you anything else, including any bonus, benefit, PTO, etc that you have not been paid up to the date you turned in notice.

What happens when you get walked out the day you turn in your two weeks? I think the probability of getting walked out DAY-OF your resignation hand-in is high.

Thanks for sharing. Was your departure related to the "Transformation" and layoffs?

Actually it doesn't quite work that way. You pay for your benefits on the 15th of every month. I was fired on the 21st. My benefits were paid through the end of the month. They had already been deducted from my paycheck on the 15th. Leaving on the 1st gets you virtual benefits that are not paid for. Benefits are not free. It's a pay as you go model. Good luck trying to get medical or life insurance to pay for anything. Billing must be set up via a check in advance. You don't know what you are talking about. No information is worse than disinformation. Been there. More than the poster can ever say.

Haven’t heard of anyone “bailing” at Global Propulsion Systems. Just the VSPs.
