Bridging Retirement

With the layoffs last year some people got their retirements "bridged". What does this mean and at what age do they force retirement? Does anyone know or have experience with this?

Bridge to retirement is a good thing. It is where a company takes care of people who are almost retirement eligible (say 54 years old) and grants them extra points in the retirement algorithm so that they can retire without loss of retirement benefits.
