Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

What makes me mad the most is the timing of it all

What irks me the most about the layoffs is the timing in which it happened, right before Thanksgiving the announcements started coming in about plant closures and salaried layoffs. What a way to start the holidays!

Like they couldn’t announce it earlier in the year, like June before the summer would have been nice. Heck at least then I could care less about being unemployed for a couple weeks or months. Could have spent time with the family or gone camping while I looked for a job.

Nope! Instead they decided to tell us before the holidays, ruined the whole rest of the year for us. Made Christmas, Hanukkah, etc stressful for everyone. Then they drag it out even longer past the New Year to ruin the beginning of the year for us.

And why did they do that? Because they had vehicle launches to do in the summer of course. They wouldn’t want to risk a vehicle launch by telling us we will be let go.

Think about it, if you knew this was happening in mid June you would have had another job lined up before Thanksgiving, nothing to worry about over the holidays and would have started the New Year right.

So f—k them all. If I do make it past the layoff I will be looking for a different job anyways. Thanks MB! I’m glad you have been able to hoover the GM stock just above post bankruptcy levels! Maybe you should be the one on the chopping block.

On a team of 2 and supervisor took the VSP. I have a feeling if nothing else that saved us.

Any WTC designers hear anything other than rumors?

My manager gave a hint that our project was safe. Probability of me making the cut: > 80%. If I do make the cut, I will take whatever bonus comes then bail on this company. Several co-workers will do the same.

I feel ya, I really do. This is a reoccurring situation with this company. That's the experience of 20 years speaking.

But, not to worry. No one trusts GM and their stock, so it goes no where. When the next fiscal crisis comes, like in 2001, and 2008, you'll be able to buy their stock for less than $10, mark my words. Don't believe it, but keep this post in the back of your mind when this proves correct.

If you don't want anything to do with GM, just short it when the time comes. Otherwise, grow with the company when it's selling for pennies on the dollar. Every look up what the blue chips tanked to back in 2008? It's coming again, but worse than before.

Layoffs always happen before the close of the fiscal year. That is just good business.
