Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Reapplying after layoff?

Ran into a former coworker - who is doing great after being laid off, by the way - and as we were talking about GE he mentioned he was given an option to reapply right after he was laid off.

Now, he has no reason to lie to me, so I believe him, but I don't understand the logic behind it. Why lay off somebody just to basically invite them back in straight away?

Who in their right mind would re apply to place that laid you off? I most definitely wouldn’t come back. After this next wave of layoffs I’m pulling my 401k out and taking the union Benifit in one lump sum.

I have seen it used because they have to lay off an equal number of people under 40 to match with people over 40 and they often invite the people under 40 who were low paid to reapply to another position. It was done in the bar shop....

Just because someone is in management doesn’t mean he won’t make dumb decisions or not be thorough.

So they might be laid off salary person whose business unit does not have openings say in GE Power but they can apply for openings say in GE Aviation.

If it is the same business unit, I have seen the layoff and reapply used in IT and other functions especially those that could be moved to India and other low cost countries as a way of forcing employees who wanted to stay to take a significant cut in their salary as it allows the company to avoid some claims of discrimination or the targeting of protected employees even while they do in fact target people.

A way to weed out the losers the Union’s been protecting for so long? I’m looking in to this as I actually worked when I was there.
