Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

How many people have you all turned away from the GM brand?

Personally it's 3 for me right now, convincing friends and family to purchase Ford or a Japanese brand. Hopefully others are doing the same and letting GM know we will not stand idly by and do nothing while they lay off thousands of honest and hard working people!

Building advocates against, for life, one at a time. For some, it didn't just start in 2018, but much earlier.

Life isn’t fair. Here’s a media darling (Elon Musk) firing people in fits of rage in the most unprofessional ways possible as he tries to compete in this industry. Oh, and his company that metro Detroiters like to crack on IS getting EV market share.

Are you boycotting Tesla? Meanwhile, it seems some GM employees demand permanent job security in this changing and competitive time. Every company has layoffs, telling friends and family to boycott GM because you lost your job is just as pathetic as pressuring them to “buy GM” because of a misplaced sense of pride. Stop attaching your self worth to your company, you are at best a paid mercenary and at worst a wage slave. Wise up, volunteer, get a hobby, start a business, stop blaming others.

Only people I know who would support your actions are those that have no clue of how businesses work. Dan Ammam was brought in by the government after the bankruptcy. He said "historically, GM was always late in righting the ship, but it will not happen again". This round of cuts is meant to stave off a very bad business position looming in the horizon. If GM didn't do this, more cuts would happen and more would lose jobs. You being sacrifized for the good of many should not be viewed as bad and let it not be in vain.

I work for Ford and I think telling your friends to go buy Ford is the worst advice, unless you don't want to be friends with them anymore.

Boycott is NEVER the answer as it hurts the little people in the company more than the executives. Think about the friends and co-workers you had good relationships with. DO you want them to lose their jobs too? I know misery loves company, but the wise is slow to anger. Brush yourself up and walk with pride if you know you've done a good job. Be a positive force, not a negative one.

Over a dozen, but not sure the exact count. In our circle we only have about 1 in 18 that drive GM because of it, and she is a GM employee as well. She drove a volt, and well that's done with.

She might be easy to convert now.

The difference between 2009 layoffs and 2019 is that GM lost $82 billion leading up to the 2009 layoffs, including $30.9 billion in 2008 alone. In 2018 the company made $11.8 billion even after $1.3 billion in restructuring costs.

Not sending anyone to Ford as it s---s even more. But definitely the disrespectful unfair and wrong treatment I received makes me and my family not to purchase at least 4, 5 cars which would have been all GM. I had convinced German and Japanese car purchasers in relative and friends to buy expensive GM cars instead, those will be all down the drain from now on. But I am sure nothing would hurt GM more than the self inflected wound ; the remaining people who saw how unfair the process was.

Where was this outrage in 2009 for the ones cut then? Or does it only come out when YOU are affected?

rtc, surely you can provide a link to these 800 job postings? I don't see them.

I have turned away zero people and I am encouraging everyone I know to buy one. All the people working on these vehicles pour their blood sweat and tears in to them. I bust my behind to make the part of the vehicle I work on the best anyone has encountered. And if you are going around telling everyone not to buy one because you had a bad break up then I think you are a terrible person.

GM pays their people very well. It was the same for the supplier I worked at for 15yrs. After I was let go from there, with a nice package if I might add, I was not angry trying to destroy that company. I made a lot of money there and I was not bitter towards them at all.

Loyalty should only be to you and yours, support something because you believe in it. So much the better when you can support things you hold dear. For me this just means that GM will have to supply a much better product to overcome what I see as an unfairness. Be a good capitalist add up the + and - and do what is right for you. GM has done nothing more or less nor should you. I think GM has a defective calculator. This will be big minus for me when considering any investment in GM.

GM has shown no loyalty to laid off employees, nor Metro Detroit, nor Michigan, nor America. These layoffs have hurt the economy of all three. Why is anyone surprised by this reaction? Millennials now make up the largest share of the market, and the ethics and morality of companies from whom they buy products is a key consideration for them. Look at other posts. Do 70 job postings prior to layoffs and 800+ after, some workers being told to reapply, and good, hard-working employees being laid off scream ethical behavior/

Respectedly F**k grown up ppl. You don’t buy products because you love or hate brands, you buy it because its quality. It’s big purchase. You are the one killing GM brand because you blindly bought GM brand eventhough they were bad back in 2000s.

US needs automotive employees but that doesn't mean they have to work for a GM. Ignoring incompetence and lack of integrity is not a big picture win. You're right, this is capitalism. So let better people win.

So, since you were laid off, you want to take steps to hurt GM as a company (and metro Detroit, and Michigan, and America)? Makes a lot of sense. I’m sure the executives who will be raking it in no matter what will really suffer.

While you are at it make sure to boycott any other company that has laid people off, you’ll have a lot to boycott. This isn’t the 50’s, it s---s that loyalty doesn’t exist but instead of throwing a tantrum use it to your advantage and get paid.

I'd buy a Ford or Japanese because it was better, not because they laid you off!

You're very reactionary. Maybe re-think the next company you work for, and the possibility they may lay you off, outsource, or automate your job. It happens all the time, everywhere, and becoming more frequent. The days of companies being loyal to their employees have been gone for decades.
