Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

I heard if you take 20 days vacation they can’t lay you off?

It makes sense.. you are not expected to be on call while on vacation.. if management denies vacation it will prove that they know..

Also I believe that in general you earn vacation days on a quarterly basis. So if you are eligible for 20 vacation days for the calendar year, then on Jan. 1 you have only "earned" your vacation days for Q1. If you use more vacation days than that and get laid off or leave, you might risk having to pay back the pay you received for any extra vacation days you took that you hadn't "earned" yet.

You'll get whacked when you return. Your prior status matters not. You've been chosen for elimination. They will eliminate you at their first opportunity. I saw guys return from Medical in 2009 get axed. They didn't know it, but, they returned to from medical to receive their packed box and to meet with HR. This is just that brutal.

If you are in the guard or reserve get activated/deployed and you get to keep your job

you can be layed off while on vacation. If they can't reach you - you will find out when you return and your layoff start date will be the same as other folks.

That's ridiculous. I would say you are probably safe if you are on something like maternity leave due to laws and such, but vacation? No way
