Honest question - so many people hate working here and yet nobody leaves. Why?

I was there for 13 years and I was finally kicked out by being laid off. Ex DM. I stayed for that time first half was commission. The 2nd half I stayed because I was making over $26 an hour with SPIFF allowance and hourly. Paid well enough to support a family of 4 on my own. So I was content staying till retirement. I am glad they let me go. I no longer work Sundays. Have holidays off. Less I am currently taking a paycut but not much longer. Lowe's is hell. Crazy hours. They expect the world from 1 person. It's really not meant for long term. Most people with families leave eventually for more stability and set schedules.
Because I still get my spiff allowance, it can’t be that bad of a job if half the people that leave end up back at Lowe’s.
Just because someone tells the truth about their personal Lowe's experiences does not mean that they are angry or disgruntled or hate Lowe's. Opinions are often made in hopes perhaps someone will listen and changes will take place as a result of it. People can't say that others are unable to get jobs outside of Lowe's elsewhere because they lack skills, etc., because job availability for different skill sets, The truth is that the job market varies greatly based on where someone lives. I know many who had great paying jobs in IT but could only find a retail job because there was nothing else available in the area. After being in retail for a while, you are unable to find outside jobs often because they no longer consider your skills viable after a few months outside of a certain field. People are rapid to judge but it varies based on an individual situation. There are a lot of people being very honest. Some may be written by family or friend to support their loved one who works at Lowe's so it may not even be the actual employee writing these comments but they are truthful.
Have you tried to find a job when you are over 40? Age discrimination is rampant. Had to apply numerous times before I even got an interview at Lowe's. Even park services would not talk to me because I was over qualified. It is a cruel world out there for anyone really that is over 30. It is the people with age that are more loyal and have a strong work ethic but they are not appreciated. It is easy for millenials to make nasty comments but you have not lived life or experienced negative reality of the world we live in.
Troll below, Boy this minion is bizzzzzzzzzy!
All of you make the point , that’s what is crazy. Bottom line many of you are overpaid for what you do , that’s why you can’t find a job that pays more. Many of you have terrible attitudes which I am sure shows through in interviews. Many of you don’t have the resume to go anyplace else and make more money. So you should be grateful for what you have and work to maximize it because if Lowe’s does fire you in the future you are screwed and you are showing that everyday u can’t find another job.
Where else can you drink beer at work?
Who says we hate(d) working at Lowes? A lot of us love our careers, and Lowes promised us a lot. Now Lowes is giving us the ax, en masse.
I would have been happy to stay. Does anybody actually think we're going to be happy when we find out that the Lowes "family", and their PR spew, is a pack of lies?
This is an id--tic post.... It's like saying if you don't like paying taxes then just stop.
This job was supposed to be temporary. Back when I started we got quarterly bonus, inventory bonus, $2 for every credit app we entered into system, christmas bonus, bonus from vendors if we sold certain items, paid holiday time & if you didn't take the time off then you basically got an extra 1 week paycheck at the end of the fiscal year, company stock was on the rise, yearly raises were good plus if you moved up your pay increased, especially if you worked in a metro area then great opportunities to move around & make more money. Then Niblock came aboard and it got harder & harder to bonus, no more credit app bonus, no more christmas bonus, no more vendor bonus, no more inventory bonus, take your time off or lose it.
And then one day you wake up and realize that the world has moved on. Unable to go back to previous profession cause now they will only hire with some kind of degree (didn't need one before). You've stayed with this Company long enough to make semi decent money but you are now only qualified for retail and no one else will hire you with starting pay at what you are currently making.
I still enjoy my job and my co-workers and I take pride in how long I have been with this company.
Guess I feel I am too old to start over.
Only because of my bills. I like the rest of my team am actively looking for a job I actually want. The plus is having the time to find just the right fit for my life and where I want to go. I'll never settle again like I did when I came to Lowe's. I give them the same respect ive been shown which means I no longer come in early, stay late, cover a shift, and if someone is stealing I'll just walk away. This is nothing more than a check now.
I agree with the first post.
Problem being the other companies make cuts and changes. Lowes feels the need to stay “competitive “ and makes similar changes.
So down the hill we go. It’s easier to steer down that hill than it is to get out and help push.
Marvin is at the wheel and prefers the easy job.
I second the first post and would add the employee discount as another reason why I stay.
I too am looking to get out, but can’t afford a pay cut or going to an employer who won’t grant me an increase.
Initially I had my hopes up when Marvin came on board but now I see that it is more of the same.
Very honest answer. Thank you.
Here are a few reasons why I remain:
1.). With retail on your resume, it’s hard to get out. I refuse to keep jumping from one retail sinking ship to the next. The grass is the same regardless of what side you are on.
2.). Benefits. While the health benefits here s---, the vacation/holiday/sick time is hard to find when starting somewhere new.
3.). Pay. I’m actively searching for jobs outside of retail, but everywhere seems to want to hit me with a 5$ an hour pay cut.
4.). Lowes is very easy place to simply come to work and exist. It’s not a matter of being lazy or not working hard, but I know what to expect when I walk through the doors each day.
Do I enjoy working at Lowe’s? Absolutely not. The recent changes/cuts/ etc make things far worse than in the past for both customers and employees. I look for new jobs everyday, but as I said above, I’m not trying to stay in retail any longer so it’s difficult to say the least.
Best of luck to everyone who left or is trying to leave. Many years ago when I started I had faith in this company. That has run out!
