I heard they were changing some laws about #H1B, something like you'll need a masters degree or something like that... Will research this more but wanted to share, you may want to search news.

I think we need to do this, if they want to bring people into the country let's at least have them well educated - a lot of #bachelordegree diplomas from 3rd world countries are just bad, poor quality. Some are good but many are just bad.

I can confirm many H1B contractors were let go in full, as part of my department and part of the mass layoffs. Some were employed only a few months.

Yes this kind of hiring is disheartening. Our mandate was to try and acquire (alternative) country resources to help fill a role. We were to over time, rely on them more and more, but the talent was simply not there. So what do we find out today, they're migrating here to the US, and applying directly. This is troublesome, especially given the diversity mandates. We hire ethnicity and genders, solely for the purpose of hiring ethnicity and genders, and not because of skill set nor talent. Very worrisome indeed, especially considering the constant promotion of such material.

Kind of reminds me of the movie Atlas Shrugged, and the movement it's pushing intellectuals towards. Who is John Galt? If you don't know the comparison, you may want to.

To replace dedicated employees with stupid H1B contractors is not just a slap in the face to GM employees, but to the American worker, in general. How disgusting and deliberate a practice from greedy corporate execs!

I saw a few H1B contractors were made permanent last week only in my department. Shocking to me, letting Americans go and making H1 permanent.

It was a surprise to everyone on all levels, even through the manager level. Managers in at least our area, were not even made aware. The decisions were made at the director level or higher, without warning given to the managers. No notice, just don't come to work. What you have left, is what you have left, until the salaried cuts officially come. Completely unprofessional, and an abomination on behalf of a company that actually thinks they are professional grade. I sat in a meeting from a higher up executive, that stated they put about $1500 in stuff in their Denali line, and mark those components up ten times the amount. That's right, if your buying the Denali name, your getting hosed and supporting an undeserving company. That sounds to me more like shady grade, and not professional grade. The manner in which these layoffs occurred, NOT professional, and not professional grade. Sub-human is more like it.

Anyways, all contractors in our department have been eliminated. Word has it this is not only to clean up the structure, but mostly to get at the aging salaried that simply won't yet retire. To do this, they have to go through contract first to get to the rest. 15% of salaried and contract go. 25% of director level, and 35% of the upper executive level were to be dismissed or bought out, word on the street.

I've learned my lesson a very long time ago. As someone that has gone through multiple layoffs with GM, it's quite routine. Only this time, it's been the most unprofessional and questionable of any case in it's history. This is much worse then when Rick Wagner did it when filing bankruptcy. He did it out of desperation. Mary will be remembered as doing it out of greed, at a time when the company has posted yearly record profits for multiple years. She will be remembered as the first female automotive head of a company, that took the Trump tax cuts, and simply kept them for the company. Only to be followed by layoffs.

I learned a long time ago, always prepare for events like these. Second, never trust this company, and treat it only as a mercenary for hire business exchange. Invest no more than they invest in you. If it's a wage for a talent exchange, leave it at that. You don't owe them through means of purchasing their overpriced products. In my duration of time, I purchased two new vehicles, cash in hand, from their competitors. When this company continually takes a dump on the people most important to it's success, it's employees, then you simply treat it as a wage for talent, hired mercenary exchange. Nothing more, nothing less. You owe them nothing, as evidence of this layoff, they owe you nothing.

As I've said before. When a customer gets upset, they simply stop buying the product. When an employee is burnt over and over again throughout their career, they become an advocate against the company. They don't buy nor pitch the products, and they share their negative experiences with everyone they know. It seems to me, GM has their priorities backwards.

Look up the term "Get woke, go broke". Companies all over are starting to feel the sting and backlash of the public. We will not tolerate nonsense on behalf of these behemoths.

Just disgusting that GM would treat it's people like this. Employees should have no further trust in GM management. Makes no sense to get rid of skilled workers while maintaining the very management that made losing decisions. I guess if you are in the vaunted Boy's Club you get to stay no matter what your performance. In the meantime these longtime employees who dedicated their lives will find themselves out in the cold. And if they are in their 50s-60s, no company will hire them. It's a real shame.

Keep in mind that many of my mom's co-workers decided to relocate to Tennessee - so, if you can do it you may have that option still open. Check out UAW 1112's posts - you can find some details there.

My mom works in Lordstown, she was told she'll be leaving after March 1, 2019. So, still there - not sure about other GM people. She's crushed as she was hoping to retire here - she needed 6 more years.

Ms Mary is looking old. Seems she can't weather the backsplash at her. The logic executives use to close a facility. Example Lordstown only has a paint facility that can only handle one car at a time. Duh well add some capacity rather than spend millions disrupting lives and closing costs.
