Thread regarding Sears layoffs

CNN: Sears' holiday shopping season is off to a rough start

The data shows foot traffic at Sears and Kmart was down 14% over the three days that followed Thanksgiving, compared to the same holiday weekend a year ago. Traffic was down 17% on Black Friday, 7% on Saturday and 16% on Sunday

The company is hoping to use the bankruptcy process to shed costs and close additional stores and emerge as a profitable and competitive retailer. But its own bankruptcy court attorneys have said that a strong holiday shopping season is crucial for its ability to stay in business.

"The weeks that are coming up are really critical for the company's ability to reorganize," said Ray Schrock, its attorney, at a bankruptcy court hearing a week before Thanksgiving.

Schrock predicted the company would be able to post an increase in sales compared to sales at the same stores a year earlier. But Sears has a string of sales declines dating back to 2010.

Sears' sales figures could take an even bigger hit this year as nearly 200 of the 700 stores it still had at the start of the holiday season are in the process of holding closing sales. Those sales include deep discounts on the price of its remaining inventory, and no restocking of items once they sell out.

Hate to break it to you, but the stores that are packed are the ones next in line for liquidation

they are packing the stores with merchandise for the next round of closings. They did the same thing in our store right before we were told we were closing, sending so much stuff we had nowhere to put it and the warehouse was packed.

Down 14% with less than half the stores? We knocked itmout of the park!!

Our store has been slammed everyday since friends and family.

Our store 1758 has a ton of merchandise that our floor is packed and we still have a ton of stock in the stockroom. Not sure why many keep saying empty shelves, we can definitely send some stuff over your way.

no PS2

Hah. There's probably a PS2 being sold somewhere in these liquidation sales.

Full year comps have been terrible for years. -14% in 2017. -7% in 2016. -9% in 2015. It's only worse this year because there's nothing left to sell, and there's nothing members want to buy. No Apple, no Sony, no PS2, no electronics section, no laptops, a half baked selection of Kenmore appliances, no name tires, out of fashion clothing, Dollar store knickknacks, stores falling apart, escalators that don't work, disinterested associates who are actively hiding from members, and leftover inventory from liquidation sales that no one wanted to buy, no maintenance, and to top it off, no loss prevention team to speak of. But yes, $250 of freecash for $250 of purchases! Infinite turkey freecash! That's just liquidation by another name.

and those numbers are against terrible comps, they were down double digits last year too. So same store sales are down 25% (more or less) vs only two years ago. that cannot be outrun by cost cutting.

It's sad. No foot traffic. Shelves empty. Morale down. Can see that this will be the last christmas as we know it.

It’s over. We keep going through the motions in Hoffman but the numbers keep showing a worse situation everyday. Such a sham.

I wonder how much of the rest of the holiday activity is just going to be people using up their Thanksgiving freecash. There was so much of it given out.
