Black Friday returns to Tutu Park Mall KMart

ST. THOMAS — Early morning shoppers lined the sidewalk outside the Tutu Park Mall Kmart in Friday’s predawn darkness for the first time since the day after Thanksgiving 2016.

Outside in a light rain, shoppers mostly had possible deals on their minds, even if Christmas shopping — the traditional reason given for early store openings and long lines on Black Friday — wasn’t. The store’s doors were set to open at 5 a.m., and by 4:30 a.m., about 55 people had queued up to get into the store.

Interesting fact: the Guam store and the Virgin Islands stores do NOT participate in SYWR. For some reason the company has chosen not to extend SYWR to these stores.

This one and Guam might be the only Kmarts in the company to have a line on Black Friday.

"While the 55 people at 4:30 a.m. might seem like a large number, it’s actually about half the size of the usual Black Friday line, Burrows said. That may stem from Hurricane Irma, which closed the second-largest Kmart by volume in the United States for months while the store underwent repairs, Burrows said."
