This is an interesting article, where the author states that both culture and appearances matter tremendously and criticizes the CEO for an underwhelming debut on the global stage, while dressing down.
The culture predating this CEO has been that of tending to appearances, talking the success up -- the messenger beaming with confidence, dressed up in expensive suits. The results have spoken for themselves.
The culture is absolutely critical; it will make or break the company. The appearances are important, but they will not replace substance and results.
Give the CEO a chance. It is high time for this culture to change and value substance and results over the appearances.
