Second Wave - 800 jobs to be cut

There are rumors swirling that the January layoff will be 800 positions. This is almost double the first wave. I’m starting to get really nervous.

If there is truth to this rumor then no one is safe.

One thing is certain UPRR said they will cut THRU 2020. More will be coming. I havent heard of any more managers getting cut tho since I got the wack back in November. North Platte just laid off 118 union workers tho.

"All False. This would be over the WARN Act threshold. No government notice has been issued."

I thought that the government was shut down? Partially at least? Who would they notify if there is no one around to notify? It is all by design...

You do realize the Penalty for violating the WARN act is only 60 days pay and benefit. My understanding is everyone that has left was given a package of about 6 months pay.

Penalty for violating the WARN Act

An employer who violates the WARN provisions is liable to each employee for an amount equal to back pay and benefits for the period of the violation, up to 60 days. The liability may be reduced by the period of any notice that was given and any voluntary payments that the employer made to the employee, sometimes referred to as "pay in lieu of notice."

I haven’t heard exact numbers for first quarter 2019, but I do know they are moving quicker than expected with the up2020 implementation strategy. So I wouldn’t be surprised if they let more people go over the 10% goal that was originally stated for 2019 to get closer to the total 30% goal before 2020. My department vp advised that our department will be doing the needed 20% first quarter 2019 instead of doing 10 percent first quarter and then the last 10 percent later. I’m sure other departments may be considering that as well.

Just under 500 people have already been let go. My understanding is that was the initial 10%. There is still 20% of ‘management’ that needs to be addressed, which should be around 800.

How did you get 800 more people equals 30%?

Is that 800 manager jobs?

To get to 30%, ~800 more people would need to be let go. It might not all be in January but it will be in 2019. Union Pacific will stop at nothing to reduce costs and drive their employees into the ground. You are naive or have too much retention stock to think otherwise.
