c'mon let BigP troll. It's fun. So many people cleaned up on severance while already in new jobs or just retired early that nobody needs to feel sorry for anyone "impacted." We were lucky compared to people that left for free because they just couldn't take it any longer. Only thing "impacted" were tax brackets from too much severance cash on top of new job incomes. People need to embrace the pivot and all its riches! Frankly, GF hadn't been this good since IBM was handing out $100k bonuses trying to secure enough mercenaries willing to see the deal through and not bail out prior to the acquisition. Happy New year and best of luck to all those who hung on this far to get themselves pivoted in the next wave this spring! It's definitely coming as Tommy is already announcing it with the usual bold ownership and transparency that he is known for. Listen carefully for the key planted question at next town hall and you might get even more leadership insights to plan for your own big payday.

So BigP (if you are the real one or the fake one, it doesn't matter), you say that you got off the "messin' with GF" giving the reason "out of common decencey and respect". I do respect that (and I am guessing you are the real BigP due to the preponderance of misspellings). However, you should also consider the "common decency and respect" when calling people who got laid off "loosers" (losers to the rest of us) and lazy. These layoffs had nothing to do with individual abilities or work ethic. It was a decision by top management for an earlier poor decision and mismanagement. As you can attest, layoffs are life changing events for many folks. When you have no money coming in and you need to pay for just everyday necessities, it is extremely stressful. I've been there. Earlier in my career I took a position on a research project that had "guaranteed" funding for 2 years with likely follow up of 2 more years (DARPA). About 7 months in, the defense contractor we were subcontracting from, cut off all subcons on the project (with little warning) and my whole team (about 10 people) were unceremoniously terminated. My wife was pregnant at the time and with little severance (2 weeks-whoopee!!), just being out of grad school we had little savings (meaning $0) and looking at astronomical COBRA payments was not a laughing matter. So your "trolling" may be humorous to many but for those in a bad situation who are trying to make sense of what happened with their career or dream job , it does cross the boundary of "common decency and respect." Please keep that in mind in the future.

PS: I was actually laid off and enjoy reading this site so I was just stoking the flames to keep the threads going. It wasn't hard to tell I was being sarcastic most the time. I'm sorry about that, it was selfish of me to do it. BigPivot comes clean!!! Seriously...."attrition at normal levels for holiday season".....you guys thought I was being serious or from HR? Haha that was what started my alter ego posting when I saw people taking sarcasm so seriously out of blind rage. It was too much to resist. You're not much of an expert, either. Fairchild Semiconductor was recently in business for almost 20 years (1997-2016) as an independent company, nothing to do with National, pulling in between $1.2-1.5B annually. They had 3 fabs in the USA. One of them closed in the 2015 time frame. They were recently acquired by On Semiconductor. I am not sure how you would consider yourself an expert not knowing that information, it's pretty common knowledge in the semi industry and there are several Fairchild expats at GF in Malta.

This guy is a real expert, you should pay attention to him. KLA-Tencor shutting a fab? It's not even a chip company, they make equipment. The company has been growing steadily for 40 years. PMC-Sierra had a tiny fab in the US over 20 years ago, I wouldn't cite them as a leading example. Fairchild disappeared decades ago (National kept the name only) but spun off some of the most successful companies in history (ever heard of a little place called Intel)? Try to understand business before you tar and feather all companies with the same brush as GF.

Great observation! Called corporate greed. Execs maximize their bonuses and everybody else gets screwed, but they don't care.
