It seems it was the unchecked power of CEO and Chairman roles combined with one man's ego that destroyed the company. Mr. Langone says that directors who dared to have a differing opinion were pushed out. The WSJ article similarly points out the CEOs distaste for dissent.
Ken Kagome was asked to leave the board in 2005 by Jeff "I melt". Lagone wasn't part of the demise of GE
