Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Layoffs coming across the board

While executives pat each other on the back and talk positively about GM's future as a technology company relatively new employees in IT are wondering if they will have a job come Christmas. Extreme cost cutting measures have begun and many believe across the board layoffs will definitely happen and soon. GM over hired in it's rush to in-source a completely out-sourced IT five years ago. It's not enough that recent new hires come almost exclusively from the ranks of relatively cheap college graduates, now we have layoffs to worry about. Who do you think they will keep? Cheap college graduates or seasoned professionals? Who is GM offering a voluntary severance to now? 12 year plus company veterans, that's who. And there is your answer. If you are an experienced professional in IT you should look elsewhere for your next career move. You have been warned.

Every damn guy in our company who moved out in the last 5 years moved to GM because of a default

20% pay hike. and 20% less work. No wonder they are over hired.

Time to over--fire.

How in the world can you make profit and sustain when the company is willing to give average supervisory level employees big yukon xl, escalades to keep as car perk with gas paid ?...Does not make sense that you could sustain that kind of excess.

It is rumored that around 30% will be toast and there is confirmation that IT will be significantly impacted. What a shame. I could understand a 10-15% cut to get rid of dead wood but 30%? Poor planning and execution from the executives.
