Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

GE restructure calculations

They may list GE power as a separate tracking stock, keeping Aviation and HC in mothership. Or even sell power to BHGE and sell stake in combined company. BHGE is already in energy services and will pay premium for installed base.

Shrink power and focus on grid, consulting and battery/solar additions to gas/coal plants.

Fossil fuels in power gen are on decline. You don’t want to be the biggest player in shrinking market. Painful. Get out now and re enter after solar micro grids and evs disrupt the market. Get back by buying fastest growing disruptor.

If culp keeps power, he will be fired faster than jf

Found this comment on GE Power's board, agree with the OP, can see one of these scenarios coming true.

Each side thinks other side is clueless during disruption.

Just look up how much of new power gen is renewables in last 3 years.

In 2017 it was 70%.

Denial isn't just a river in Egypt.

Installed base is worth less every day with every layoff of experts by vendors like GE.

Agree as to long business cycles but the calculus has changed now with wind and solar.

Power will never be the same.

Installed base is like film for analog cameras.

The discussion is about how fast installed base value will decline. Incumbents will believe it will be real slow while challengers will believe it will be fast.

How do you resolve? Look at data.

Alstom installed base value just got assessed as 0 in recent $23B write-off of Goodwill. Last quarter it was worth billions, now not so much.

You can believe what you want. Just look at history of disrupted technology companies. Deny deny deny and then they are out of business.

Renewables have problems. But are they solve able? Will the digital camera ever need to surpass the best SLR? Or it needs to be good enough and free?

Whoever wrote is initial thread has no damn clue how GE power makes money. It is called the thousands of Gas Turbines and steam turbines installed base. Why did GE buy Alstom? It was called “ installed base and there ability to have steam path retrofit for the GE fossil units. Translation, services, services, services. If GE ever sold this business they might as well close the doors. This business is a long cycle business that is in a predicted down turn. Should they shrink operations there ? Hell yeah , the problem is the EU nations are prohibiting GE from doing this for legacy Alstom including GE Belfort EPE.

At least Nuclear doesn’t have quality issue, according to Stokes.

Will GE keep nuclear? Seems less promising than fossil? I have a family member who works for GE nuclear and I'm worried for her
