Thread regarding Mattel Inc. layoffs

The Barbie movie

Very sorry to disappoint one of the previous posters, but instead of ditching Barbie, we are making the Barbie movie. Mattel is partnering with Warner Bros, according to media A-list actors like Margot Robbie will be engaged. Needless to say, the movie will be a milestone for the newly created movie division, as if the movie doesn't turn out to be a success, the company might decide do limit their resources or even shut down this experiment. Really hope they don't screw this one up.

On it's most basic level a story is nothing more than a character overcoming a series of challenges or conflict. Barbie lives in a conflict free world, there is no war, no villains, no hardship. It will be interesting to see it and how the filmmakers create enough conflict to allow for an engaging story.

The CEO recently said that the idea of a self aware movie that pokes fun at the Barbie brand (Amy Schumer as Barbie starts out in a picture-perfect land of picture-perfect Barbies, but it begins to dawn on her that she doesn’t quite fit in. After she’s kicked out, she winds up in the real world where she comes to realize that it’s a good thing to be unique) was a terrible idea, so we won't be seeing this version of a Barbie movie under his watch.

This movie will only succeed if it has deprecating humor and makes sarcastic fun of Barbie and we all know that won’t happen , BARBIE is tooooooo precious !

I'll bet they're going to try and make a film that appeals to both little girls who currently play with Barbie but also attract adults who still have nostalgia for the brand from their childhoods. If the just wanted to go after the little kid demographic I think they'd just make another animated film and put it on Netflix or DVD or whatever. Clearly they're hoping this becomes a big hit, probably looking to top $500 million at the world wide box office. It's easy to imagine this bombing spectacularly if they don't play their cards right, but maybe they can pull it of. They really need to hire a woman director, preferably a WOC to help run damage control on the fact that they picked Robbie to star. The online blue haired feminist outrage mob will be none too pleased me thinks.

Hahahahaha Barbie stewards are still under the impression that girls over 6 give a c-ap.

There is no “older girl” market. There is no “tween” consumer. This is just more ivory tower strategy that’s out of touch w reality. But by all means spend away!

Oh wait. She’s already under contract with WB and she’s blonde. Hooray!

From Tonya Harding to Barbie. Good call!

yes margot is an attractive blonde, but do 4 year olds resonate to 28 year old actresses? Why not get a cool young teenager? oh wait, i know... this is RD's brainchild.

Better off asking Tim burton to make a monster high movie.

I love Margot Robbie. Is she playing barbie’s mom? I’ve always wanted to see the sequel to clueless.
