you can't say F--- unions, because a union is only effective as we want them to be. the involvement of the worker determines decisions and outcomes. i used to work for another company with terrible union representation- but it took really understanding what unions are about to realize that it was terrible because no one cared or was involved.
first and foremost, we would need to negotiate job protection. you say its virtually impossible to get fired these days, but on the other side of the token, i have seen plenty of people (TL, ATL, Buyers) "separated" due to personal/childcare issues, inability to be be FT by giving 100% open availability, health related issues, etc etc. They use this "30 days" method of separation after someone has to step down, that usually finds people scrambling to find a new position within the region or lose your job- while likely taking a significant pay cut. i have seen it happen a number of times.
also, the raise to $15/hr should not be viewed as a gift or a morale booster. the raise was the absolute least they could have done for us- especially considering that the blanketed $15 increase is still not a live-able wage in every city. it also doesn't help that TMs are being told that a lot more is going to be expected of them with this pay increase. thats ridiculous.
the fact is- a union is definitely what we need right now.
