Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Closure and Dismantling of Bartlesville is nearing

The COP CIO has announced that he is "all in" with the cloud, that should start the downsizing of Bartlesville IT. Phillips 66 is doing the same thing and their layoffs are to resume Jan 1 2019 in Bartlesville/Worldwide.

I am guessing the next two years will dismantle Bartlesville. Leaving some of the Finance and HR people in Bartlesville. But that can easily be moved to Houston, for both companys.

If you don't like changes, why would you work in IT? Those PSX people needed to leave anyway. I'm surprised the iPhone didn't make them all quit.

"Real developers don't want to build apps this way"

Yes, all the tech companies are scrambling to move to small towns in the middle of nowhere and get their apps out of the cloud. Not.

The "real developers" you are talking about who don't want to build modern apps are still huddled in a corner crying about the retirement of the mainframe.

Sure. It will still be around. It will just look a lot more like Ponca City.

Work for PSX and I can say the best folks are already leaving,

moral is in the tank, layoffs every year going forward, no reason to stick around except for a paycheck,

If you are over 50, get your resume updated,

Mothballing that place is going to happen soon and there is nothing you can do about it.

I honestly don’t like cloud. I don’t understand why bother sending data in cloud if there are cheap hard drives. It may be building full of hard drives but it could be easily moved in trucks/planes/ rail cars or whatever mode of transportation to wherever one wants. It’s full proof even in events like Harvey which was the worst disaster/crisis in IT history.

"The COP CIO has announced that he is "all in" with the cloud"

This is true and is the dumbest most disastrous move I've seen from this already inept group. Real developers don't want to build apps this way. If he wants his "cloud", he better convince Upper management to keep Bartlesville, because there are real developer jobs in Houston and no one would stay if those positions moved here . The platform can't handle the kind of work we do. Trying to pigeon hole everything into a web app is just plain dumb and disastrous.
