Lance and and those other higher-ups' income is directly, 100% proportional with the stock price. Lance and his circle do not care about the railroad to be healthy or to function properly, they only care about the numbers that can be put in spreadsheets to show Wall Street an increased net revenue (or future increase) because this translates into bigger bonus for them, think millions. This is proven by the in-discriminatory cuts that have no real effect on the bottom line but these people were quintessential to keep various departments running, both support, low-level management and union guys furloughed. Granted, the railroad will not come to a halt tomorrow but will screech from every corner, the remaining people are demoralized and while expecting the next wave of layoffs it is unlikely they'll do a good work in their jobs. Many of these folks are already overworked, now they have to pick up even more, I can't see how anybody will perform at any good level now. In a funny but tragic twist it seems they are keeping some low performers employed because of their higher positions, people who do not do real work. I have also no doubts some good, qualified performers still here are already polishing their resumes and will jump ships at the earliest convenience, the CEO managed to destroy whatever little loyalty was left after he started running into the ground this company few years back.
