Thread regarding Union Pacific Corp. layoffs

I’ve been on both sides, in the field and in the HDC.

The grass is not greener from whichever side you stand. There are upsides and downsides to most any job here. Bickering back and forth and criticizing the “other side” does not produce anything useful. The fact of the matter is that the company, as a whole, has shifted in a dangerous direction.

There has been a large pool of talent pushed out the door, and it is getting much harder to call this place a great employer. One of the best perks was career-long stability, and we’re all watching that erode more and more each year. I am horrified to see where this place will be in 5 years.

Exactly, I have had 3 different jobs at UP. I applied for the job by my skill set not if it were union or non union. I work and do the best I can and have at every company I have worked for in the past. My work ethic comes from me. Stop the stereotyping bs! I’ve seen people treated badly on both sides. Be nice respectful and kind. I have lost jobs to no fault of my own. Places hire consultants cut jobs and close shop all the time. Why would UP be any different?

Agreed. The grass is not greener. There are many people on all sides that come to work and bust their respective butts to get the job done. Each job has some level of trade offs, some more severe than others. It's up to the individual to determine whether or not these trade offs are worth it.

That said, it's not just this company that has shifted in a dangerous direction. It appears all class 1's are headed down similar paths. We're seeing more and more blocking and switching errors at interchange, railcars running their set-out, bad billing, and so many more issues. The ramifications of pushing knowledge and experience out the door is only going to increase. Once the dust settles, maybe the customers will be willing to settle for diminished service as has been the case with the latest PSR railroad.

I’ve seen constant changes in the 20+ years I’ve been here, I see no future for these young kids they have been hiring,
