The current count is about 360 stores left. That isn't very much, is it? Way I see it, as I have always said, Sears will probably be more of a priority to keep going longer than Kmart. Where as Eddie probably sees Kmart as a blemish of sorts that he wants to remove but he knows if he perhaps removes it too quickly it will cause a bit more bleeding than he's able to handle. Also, he's trying to look like a "good guy" saying they are trying "hard as hell" to keep both of them alive but a lot of us know the real truth.
He isn't going to save either of them, he is just using them to help fatten up his own personal gain. All he wants in the end is the real estate and the IPs (i,e, Kenmore/Diehard/Craftsman) so he can make a nice profit off of them. Ever since he has taken over back in 2013 he has not done anything to help this company grow.
As for Kmart's future, I would expect maybe another round of closures coming up before the end of this year. If not then probably a bunch more after the holiday season because my gut feeling is after Christmas is over, all bets are off on Kmart and they'll probably be fully gone by 2019.
