Talks within the last couple months of slowly shutting down Greenville and moving back to Schenectady within a few years. Power wants one centralized location for both gas and steam and everyone seems to be talking about Schenectady.

A senior executive told me that both sites will be shut down in February and the work will be moved to Cincy. Can anyone confirm?
Honestly I think they either both stay open or they both close they are too linked not to work that way.
You do realize for pretty much every turbine you pump out schenectady pumps of a generator for the most part sometimes 2 if it’s for a combined cycle plant right?
To the random low level employees in Schenec both your union and GE lies to you. Via the box charts last week. 9 STs 2019 in Schec 6 in 2020. 28 GTs 2019 in GVL and 37 in 2020 (and growing). It is important to note GVL in 2020 will be doing all Aero work 3 or 4 all Alstom work 3 or 4 and 2 Belfort frames the 6B and 9F.04. Make whatever rumors up you want but those are facts out of the box charts. I still have friends in NY that will be hurt from Schec further down sizing. So play ball with GE.

This idea of people sitting around at schenectady is very dated. Schenectady isn’t as jacked up as it was 20 years ago when I started. Still have a ways to go but that agreement from every source I hear from may have put schenectady at the top of the list to stay open.

If I wanted to refurbish my facilities in Greenville, I wouldn't schedule much work to be done there for a year. I'd keep it to a minimum as the whole place get modernized. Send the work to a different facility that could get by with the work (i.e. Schenectady). Then once the renovations/refurbishments/modernization were done, put the whole place online. The outcome will be what it will be (i.e. shut down/cutback a union shop). With orders/work being as slow as they are, this is the best time for GE to advance and modernize itself as much as possible. That's good in the long run but for now, manufacturing workers aren't what GE needs much of at the moment.

Can you clarify "number one in cost"...meaning the cheapest or most expensive? Is this just overhead and labor costs only? Material costs are inheritedly higher due to GT operating temps.

It's not the payroll that causes GVL costs to be so high, because the average site wages are $21/hr. Must be the overhead cost of maintaining such a decrepit facility.

I heard that both Greenville and Schenectady will be moved to the moon. This is part of trumps great space force plan... all I hope is that they have the same Greenville oatmeal up there
Go talk to Wind guys their HQs is not in Schenec its now Chicago. One of the reason it was moved was due to the lack of talent they can bring into upstate NY. You union guys are very very low level employees literally we can find people that can your job anywhere in the US. NY is too expensive and hard to do business in hence the downturn in all business in Schenec not just Power. Its about the state the customer and of course your sh--ty sh--ty work ethic. If you think Schenec is the lowest cost your insane you a--holes dont even work a full 8 hrs, but that not the reason for the downturn thats just one.
@2qbq....What do you do before you sell a house? You fix it up. For all any of us know, they already have it on the auction block. That goes for any GE site. Desperate times call for desperate measures, the upper echelon are not going to give up they're bonuses without a fight. The peasant employees be dam##d.
You do know the pay scale in the shop now is no different then it is at Greenville right? Actually in the meetings I’ve been to have stated that Greenville is actually more exspensive. The fact is you guys have no new builds for next year. Schenectady does do the math.
Why would GE even consider moving from a non-union to union site. If anything Schenectady would close and steam would be moved to Greenville. GE is investing $30 million next year in new equipment for Greenville, so I highly doubt the site will be closing.

I agree with Liz but with the restructuring and everything else going on in the power business, Ge power having a centralized location actually makes sense. I can see them building a new state of the art building 49 when the time and money is right. Sounds crazy but it does make sense.
The problem with that is there’s no we’re to put it without something leaving. They tore Bld 49 gas turbine building down in 2003. Don’t see them building a new building that could handle the capacity.

These talks have been ongoing for the last 5 years but its definitely in the works, I believe it's just a matter of time and money.
