Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

This is our sad reality

Honestly I feel bad for the guys who lost their jobs today, wouldn't wish it on anyone. But the company is in a world of hurt....orders half of just a year ago and Siemens, MHPS going through the same. There just isn't a place out there for these big turbines. Better to move on now if you are young and can get something.

This. It's not some big conspiracy. It's just our (sad) reality.

It's probably not a employment contract but the condition of getting relocation expenses paid by GE. He has to stay employed with the company for 24 months (or otherwise have to pay back the relo package). Getting laid off is one way to get out of it early. And GE has hired people before, paid their relocation, then laid them off a few months later. That's how bad their decision making can be.

@aob They don't care. GE HR is still functioning by the old policies, even though half the company is gone. They will not do anything in the company's best interests if they think it might be to your mutual benefit. This means you are probably stuck for now, but if it's any comfort there are others of us stuck here, too, for one reason or another.

I've worked at the Greenville SC plant for over a year and a half and have been through 3 layoffs, one of which I had to reapply and accept a job that I had no interest in doing whatsoever. I've asked GE HR to allow me to get out of my 2 year employee contract and they won't allow this to happen. I really don't want to work here so why don't they let someone who does??? I just don't get it.
