Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Any long term Cisco contractors (more than 5 years) changed to temp worker status and they only allow you to work up to one year?

I've been with Cisco for more than 5 years as a contractor and renew quarterly by SOW, but sadly just told that my status has changed to temp worker, and I can only work up to a year, then must leave. Anyone has a similar experience?

The tenure period varies to a certain degree by country but the only way around it is to transfer to a managed service. Effectively this means the company is supplying a service and not a named person. This is not a Cisco issue. Its a legal one. There have been situations where long term contractors have argued they are effectively Cisco employees and therefor have taken legal action to get redundancy / holiday / benefits etc.

If this policy has been here for years, wondering why they didn't reclass me in the previous years, but this year. Anyone know how they select long term contractors (worked more than 5 years) for reclassification to temp worker?

I was told that this is a corporate wide issue, you can only work for one more year regardless of role or department changes.

Will it help if you move from one department to another for a quarter or so and come back again? Will you still be considered temp worker?

This is not new, this "rule" has been around for 5+ years, it's theoretically supposed to push the conversion to perm employees if you are valuable enough to keep around for 1 year+. Unfortunately, not always the reqs to make that happen

Thank you again! Your information is incredibly helpful! I will work with my manager to find a new vendor, hope things will all work out in the end!

You have to find a vendor that has a managed service SOW in place. Managed service SOWs are only specifically defined with targeted need, not every vendor is capable of having their services converted. Good luck!

Many thanks for your information. This is very helpful, as I am really shocked hearing this news. What is managed service? How do I convert to being a managed service, who do I talk to about this conversion? I am all new to this and totally lost, really appreciate your additional information, would be a tremendous help!

Get converted to being a managed service. That’s your only way around it. What you speak of is a new(ish) global policy to prevent lawsuits. Non negotiable.
