Severance and tax

When my wife was laid off from another company a few years ago the amount of severance we received was significantly lower than we expected due to it being in a higher tax bracket.

Now it was my turn to be laid off, and we are trying to figure out if there is a way to avoid the same issue. Can we get severance paid out in several installments, to avoid losing out on so much due to tax?

Don't think so. You should get the different in tax rates back when you file your return. This will give you an incentive to file quickly in 2019.
