Synamedia Layoff Rumor

Rumor is that Synamedia is planning a large layoff 1 quarter after taking ownership. Conservative estimates place the SPVSS deadwood level at 39% across the board and 62% at G12+ levels.

Is this stuff about LWR shut down true ? I heard 12 were layed off, there were a few hundred left last I looked.

It happened. The LWR location completely shut down. Being new to the project, first I noticed was code was sh*t, utterly so. Not surprised this happened. Actually pretty glad it was shut down, all work off shored of course; it's where all software goes to die. And thus, all the headache of joining a doomed project and working hard to rectify the situation being met with obvious cluelessness from management makes leaving actually a huge relief. No chance any portion of this company survives. Zero.Zero% probability.

They did purchase it cheap. Cisco dumped it for a pack of chips and a bag of m&ms. The landscape for video has changed. Synamedia will likely thrive but that’s after deep cuts as they align the business to eliminate redundant roles etc. That said, the writing was on the wall when they made the sale announcement many months ago... for those that have allowed your skills to erode I wish you good luck, for others who are committed to your craft you’ll be just fine. The market is great right now so you have the upper hand!

Layoffs coming next Monday! Some have already been contacted. Management has zero understanding of the business they have purchased. It must have been super cheap.

Honestly the former NDS sites should be closed, they are beyond help.

I think IVP has to go, no vision, no customers, no revenue, no decent engineers and anyone who was decent left a long time ago. So if your work is related to IVP or whatever it’s called this week, you’re likely on the list.

I'd expect them to sunset some projects and layoff the staff connected to them. I no longer work at Cisco, but a few years ago I used to work on the RDK video solution. From what I've heard it's still in trials and still has no real deployments. Also the whole project was a clusterf***, it probably be better to just fire everyone, throw it away, and re-write something from scratch with 20 new hires. Also need some leaders with a clue.

Layoffs have to happen. So many in SPVSS got big bucks for doing nothing , generating no revenue. The management pulling in millions a year and no net new business?

Evaluating the NDS business .the majority of revenue was generated by smartcards so you could get 80% of the revenue with 500 people.I expect Synamedia to be under new owners in 2-3 years once they have stripped out the middleware rubbish. RDK anyone?

Likely there will be reorgs and 'right sizing' as they like lay offs to call, than the fly wheel will still not turn so more reorgs and 'right sizing' hoping that will be the spark. Etc etc. IVP etc dead and may end up with just the legacy stuff repackage it and sell on.

Moody's issued a B3 CFR on 1 Aug for Triton Solar Acquisitions (the U.S. entity for "Synamedia") with the following justification:

"Triton's B3 Corporate Family Rating reflects the expectation of continuing revenue declines, challenges of setting the company up as a stand-alone entity while reducing the cost structure and limited initial cash flow. We expect revenue declines to continue over the next couple years as declines persist in subscriber fees, middleware, and video processing. We expect management to expand margins through substantial cost cutting initiatives including centralizing the research and development workforce and reducing investment in video processing and cloud development businesses."

So...Moody's expects Synamedia revenue to decline over the next few years concurrent with "substantial cost cutting" including "centralizing R&D" from which one might infer that LWR is toast. And it is ALL about LWR :). As one UK manager has remarked, the US is not an "employee friendly" region--expect management to push the easy button.

There's a lot of management dead weight, especially at the VP+ level.

The politics in the upper levels of the org appear to be some serious sh--...

I'm not naming names, but definitely some of them are going to be out of a job soon.

I suspect infinite video is numbered.

MAkes sense. They probably had to take on most of the useless Cisco managers from the non-NDS divisions so it makes sense. Get rid of useless managers and keep people who actually work. Global search on Cisco would always surprise me how man people had manager title and only 1 or 2 direct reports.

Pretty lame to put name down on a rumor, primera is funding this to blow it up not barry it like Cisco did. No one allowed to work from home these days.

Really a rather poor effort -- are you new at this? Too absurdly specific for starters. Also you need some plausible backstory about how you know and no one else does. For Cisco you could claim you ate in the Building 10 cafeteria and overheard a conversation. For Synamedia... not sure yet. But keep trying, you'll get the hang of it!

2/10
