Thread regarding GlobalFoundries layoffs

Questions for Globalcast

Strangely AMD announced that they are all 7nm products to TSMC after GF announced layoff looks like a coordinated event, which one is true

1) GF informing AMD in advance that they are going to announce layoff and as a result told AMD to hold on to their announcement unitl GF completes layoffs

2) AMD informed GF that they are going to move 7nm products to TSMC and as a result, GF told AMD to hold on to their public release to avoid triggering panic. AMD probably GF's only money making customer from 7nm decided to abandon 7nm and announce layoff and asked AMD to go public

Which one is true?

Simple Q to ask - total employee count in malta site now after this R2. Check how honest he is.

@UTZlcKt-the you are correct and remember AMD was always engaged in parallel with both GF and TSMC. But, there comes a time when AMD also decides why waste valuable resources and from GF's standpoint why to lose money, so either of them could have first made a decision about canceling. Everyone @GF was skeptical about 7nm right from the beginning

Actually , for those who are aware of the technical situation and industry , it was always very clear that GF could not deliver 7nm,

AMD knew what the REST of the foundry industry already knew. They were just being very generous not to drop this bombshell at an earlier date.

You do not just move to TSMC overnight, it's a long process of design validation and Silicon qualification. More than 1 year process !!!

The bigger concern would be the huge R&D investment in 7nm which would have to be written OFF in view of this late acknowledgement of the actual situation.

I think Option 2 is closer to the truth, based upon what the timeline GF was wiling to commit to, AMD told GF call us when you have a process and they would be using TSMC. Without a firm commitment from AMD, 7 nm no longer made sense.

Right now I think GF has about a 1-2 year window to show profitability under EBIDTA before the 14 nm business starts to dry up. If they can show profitability, the shareholder may give them more capital or they will just be shutting off the lights in Malta.

Most likely all the blame is going to former CEO Sanjay Jha that it was him who had the vision for 7nm.

But, then the following questions arise:

1) Why did Tom who was the GM then say yes and the relationship he had with Sanjay?

2) Why did the CTO oblige to Sanjay's request and what kind of input did the market research, PLM team have?

3) What kind of risk management did the CTO office and Gary propose?

4) Last but not the least how come all of these decision makers are still around and have not been affected at all?

I'm totally in the And waited a bit because it wouldn't have changed their plans and knew GF NEEDED ithat announcement to be delayed or everything would have gotten conflicting.

Everyone was saying it's AMDs fault but I bet it's the other way around. I'm sure AMD knew all about this long ago. My opinion.
