Thread regarding ConocoPhillips layoffs

Just an Advice to junior employee - engineers / geos

This is just an honest opinion. Some of you may disagree, but this is how I experienced it in conoco.

In the current system, it doesn’t matter how smart you are, it doesn’t matter what do you know, most of the time (may be all the time) Your contribution won’t matter. It will only matter when your superior think so, (even when it actually doesn’t or it is all made up with no scientific bases). It will only come to light if your superior will shine. ( this has to do with the character and nature of most of the leaders/supervisors/managers at cop).

In the oil and gas industry, there is so much room for uncertainty, this makes precision and accuracy very irrelevant. For this same reason, this industry is all about waving hands and walking the talk. Because of this model, this industry can only work when oil is at certain price.

So try to work within the system and adjust your expectation accordingly.

It is a company run by bunch of mo--ns with no work ethics.

Remember Time is a flat circle, eventually what goes around comes around in different forms!

EVery other company is hiring - which is great. Oxy, Chevron, Exxon, BP, ... and conocophillips is still laying off people. Not sure how to explain the execution and the leadership here...

You also have supervisors who got the "save" by getting moved to staff jobs. But when things get better they will come out of hiding and want to be supervisors again. So good luck if you're a younger person hoping to make supervisor one day as they have so many "experienced" ones hiding in staff positions now it will probably be next to impossible to get a supervisor position.

There is also history of kicking straight 1/2 rated employees when they change groups. Your last years congratulations do not matter. Seen it done countless times that I think it’s a norm.

Yeah, that and it really helps if Daddy was a manager also, then you'll zoom right up to the top of the Org chart, doesn't matter that you're not remotely qualified or maybe not even competent for your new role,

In other words, if you want to succeed, be a brown noser. That’s how most of our “leaders” have gotten to where they are.
