Once again we lost some of our best. Why would you lay off people who are basically responsible for keeping this company going by doing the work of two sometimes three people and keep all the freeloaders?

They probably did spreadsheet it, because some fantastic performers were hit. Working against that theory is the seemingly high percentage of age 50 individuals, if they were trying to avoid a protected class lawsuit. If it was it not formulaic, I suspect many managers opted to keep the s--- ups whose primary skills are in not exposing management ineptitude.
As of july 2018 the severance pay is a for nonexempt and 10 weeks foe exempt xerox employees. Most of the admin workers are now in third world countries getting paid pennies. xerox deserves the return of pay and profit for sending most jobs offshore.
Not to justify the actions of the clowns upstairs, but I would imagine that if a manager had to assess the loss of an employee or contractor by skill and applicability to profit lines, there would be a different approach because it would take a lot longer and require additional interfacing with others. But by that time, the cat would be out of the hat.
So speed of the layoff execution was the probably the key and it was undoubtedly spreadsheeted by simple metrics such as age, pay, etc
They are also applying the pressure technique: see how much stress employees can take or how much you can piss them off till they walk away under their own volition. See how many will fall when you shake the tree. Another cost-saving measure.
Honestly, they obviously spreadsheeted tenure, age, and pay and not much else. The company is in trouble and it’s a very desperate measure that will be repeated within 2 weeks.
