I have a friend on my team who has an interview in another department? Has anybody seen that happen recently? Why are they cutting back, but interviewing people for other positions? Just a question. It doesn’t make sense to me.

The rats are fleeing the ship. So some jobs do have to be backed filled but there are a lot of empty seats un filled recs because they would rather layoff the empty seat that someone has vacated. But this is desperate times so more than just empty seats will need laying off. At the end of the day, even in a bankruptcy, sell off, merger, hand off to an outsourced company, or until total liquidation completed... someone will have keep the machine running. Even if it's a skeleton crew in the lone wastes of the cube farm.
Knowing this company it will be seven managers and one guy.
Sure, the only difference they will be rif’d by a different supervisor.
