Thread regarding Cummins Inc. layoffs

When will be next round of layoffs and will the immigrants be affected?

Something to think about when the next round of layoffs happen (see articles below). I was a highly educated, skilled, high performing, long term Cummins employee. Excellent performance reviews; however, I was laid off during their last mass layoff. I am an American. I had people working for me that were visa holders, some in process for green cards. They are still employed today. I know many outstanding Cummins employees that were let go in lieu of visa holders. Same if not higher skills. Paid more, yes, but most loyal employees will take a pay cut to save the company from requiring layoffs. Look up how many work visa apps Cummins processes, especially 2015 when they let go so many people here in the USA. (https://www.myvisajobs.com/Visa-Sponsor/Cummins/137256_Visa.htm)

Cummins finds retaining foreign talent far easier than retaining American talent, because it is one of the few companies that sponsors H1B visas for mechanical engineers. Foreigners are willing to stay in Columbus/Seymour (two very small, extremely boring towns for a millennial), and are willing to work in a field that is nearing extinction, for years on end. American workers, not being restricted by visa sponsorship, find a way out of this, into urban centers that have better job prospects.

Diesel Engines are a very low profit margin product. In order to continue making profits, companies such as Cummins (and John Deere, CAT, etc) will move production (and subsequently engineering) to developing countries, and neither Trump, nor any future president can do anything about it (other than slow down an irreversible process).

Exactly. When I was "laid off" in Dec 15, I watched as many other highly skilled engineers over the age of 50 and 15 years of experience with the company were axed. I landed on my feet with a job that pays 20% more and has better benefits. In the department that I was employed, there were 102 engineers/programmers as well as admin and only 15 were American. Its the way that they are going and they warranty returns as well as that last emissions "issue" are a sign of the level of engineering and production that they are becoming.

Cummins claims to be an all American company, ethical, and cares about their employees. Their primary responsibility is to the shareholders first. When profits aren’t high enough to support the executives lifestyles they have to cut costs. Easiest and fastest way is to cut workers, starting with higher salaries which are typically the born Americans. They need the visa workers to keep their costs down, that is why the leadership is against the Trump immigration policy.
