The self centered approach of Schlumberger will soon penalize its market share and dominance. Clients are growing impatient by the lack of responsiveness and creativity from a company that is supposed to deliver superior technology. Investment in its NPD has decreased too fast and combined with a heavy product cycle process will result in losing the technology advantage that the company claims.
In addition the poor integration of newly brought companies or of legacy segments is already weighting on the company's reputation. Schlumberger is currently no longer producing talents that is useful to its customers, it is currently focusing on producing talent to promote its own so called industry changing processes. The balance sheet is ok so far though lacking cash but PK clearly does not have the full support of the board. He is kept there as a change might be more disruptive until someone else with a greater vision and better results emerges. I doubt SLB will hire out its management, I believe the pendulum will ultimately swing back and profit to the ones that will promote a different style and vision than the one put forward today. Those are staying quiet now, and must create relationship with customers and the board to eradicate the plague of managers that are eating this company from within. SLB needs a new blue print and a real inspiration.
