Thread regarding State Farm Insurance layoffs

890 losing their jobs?

Some people from overstaffed roles found positions in understaffed/maintain roles. My question is...Does State Farm still want 890 people to walk out the door in Bloomington, or has that number been reduced?

I think they've mucked up the numbers so much at this point it's difficult to say how many. That's preferred by SF since they want to minimize their layoffs. Also getting demoted and taking a pay cut is not included in the layoff numbers but that is technically a job loss for Central IL. But knowing how bloated systems got - going from second largest IT effort in North America at one point to WTH did we do effort, there are a lot of people left without the skill set required to tangibly contribute to systems efforts. I also think SF is going to continue to release/restructure employees over time to get closer to their peers in terms of employee quantity. They have 30%+ more employees compared to other large insurance companies. I digress, but the main takeaway is SF minimized the 890 number from the beginning trying to say it was "technically only" 500. That's hogwash due to the jobs / salaries left. If I was still there, I would be working to understand future plans to get an idea of next steps. I wouldn't focus so much on how many, but who - looking at where the SF spotlight is since that determines who goes and who stays. Layoffs are the antidote to waste and inefficient processes. Which means many people are in roles they shouldn't be and couldn't contribute value because of it. Can SF leadership fix it? Nope. There is no easy short term or long term solution because the market disruption has been massive to a formerly stagnant industry which relied on easy money from a large group of predictable customers. Customers aren't so predictable now in what they want from insurance... Anyway, be safe this week.

I’ve heard that it will be significantly less than that. More people have transitioned to new roles or left the company already than had been anticipated. We will find out early next week.

No one really knows and the announcements are so close I’m inclined to say just wait and see. Even if numbers were known it’s hard to reconcile those with your individual situation. Anything guesses will be just that.. a guess
