I got an email telling me it’s faculty appreciation week and I should reach out to my local campus leadership to find out what they are doing.
I haven’t heard from local leadership in over a year. I’m not even sure who is still around. They announced the location is a teach-out but “should still offer classes for the next 4 years.”
Is this a box to check for accreditation? A few years ago I got an awful gift in the mail. And I think one year I got an exclusive faculty membership card!
So ever since I started teaching at Phoenix online in 2010 they at least mailed me something small - a keychain, a lunchbox, some socks. Did they not send us anything in 2019??
If you possibly thought for a second that you would ever be let in on the ongoing student rapine; and your tenure leads me to believe so, why would you ever deceive yourself into believing that you are a "good, competent, ethical, marketable" person?
You just may be instead a good, incompetent, unethical, self-deceiving, unmarketable fraud.

Faculty Appreciation Week should be named Faculty Exploitation Week. Of course Phoenix appreciates faculty. Why wouldn't they? Faculty deliver the product and are so happy being here that they don't want or need more compensation, advocacy, or fair and equitable treatment. The last increase I received was for $2 per class and that was in 2012. I was ecstatic with the University's sincere show of appreciation.Yes, this is designed to reflect UOP's commitment to faculty and an HLC box that is checked. Phoenix executives and major investors have built whatever fortunes amassed on the backs of faculty they have been exploiting for years. It does beg the question of why good, competent, ethical, marketable people stayed as long as they have. Many have proven UOP and Herzberg right: money or compensation is not a motivator.
