Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Why all the GE Power People are Here

While natural gas and coal continued to lead U.S. electricity generation, both declined in 2017. This marks the first time since 2008 that generation from both of these fossil fuels dropped in the same year.

At the same time, renewables – especially hydropower, wind, and solar – continued to rise according to new data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA).

@1tog

You need to get with it. Start working up the union guys, help get GE management replaced and live happily ever after as the next set of managers trembles in fear.

Stop talking about getting a new job. That won't help anyone.

You forgot @inn.

Have you seen the GT starts and fired hours for Europe? It's even worse than in the US. Iberdrola is putting the 9FB's they bought ten years ago into long term storage.

@1pmx and @1eos is obviously the same person....and also a moron. I'm happy to see GE implode. I don't work for them and never will. But I do agree with the posts on renewables not completely replacing natural gas anytime soon. Anyone who knows anything about the power industry and electricity market would agree. Its common sense. Full disclosure: i work for a U.S. based utility.

Nat gas is very plentiful and cheap. What is another example of renewable besides windmills? How many windmills does it take to power a city? And I don't think anyone posting here wants to live anywhere near a windmill farm. Very large and do make noise. This will not make GE great again.

@1eos - typical simple minded response which proves exactly the point I think @1vbw was trying was trying to make! I expect coal's market share to continue a steep decline over time. The renewables technology currently is just not developed enough in short to medium term to keep up with the demand that will result from more and more coal plants coming off line. Not to mention most operators today of wind and solar plants make very little, if any, profit. That will likely change in long term. But until then i agree with @1vgw that natural gas will still be a major player for many more years despite the 7% decline from 2016 to 2017. If you look at the chart, a bigger decline occurred from 2011 to 2012 which was then followed by a stabilization period and 2 years of growth. Just because 1 year shows a 7% decline does not mean that trend will continue to be followed indefinitely. Renewables eventually will overtake all fossil fuels in electric demand market share, but it will be much slower than many people think....or want to believe.

@Stlw0Gj-1eos = AN IDIOT

So no one else is impacted but GE Power?

Nov 16, 2017 ... Global demand for large gas turbines has “fallen drastically” to around 110 per year, well below the market's capacity to build around 400 annually,

Natural gas is going to be around for a long, long time?

If it keeps declining 7% a year so will the current generation of spare parts. The customers won't need ANY spare parts or new turbines if Natural gas declines 7% a year.

It's going to take decades for renewables to catch up to natural gas. Natural gas is going to be around for a long, long time. Renewables are not why GE Power is failing. It's lack of leadership and bad decisions, I hate GE just as much as the next guy. But people on these posts and in the media seem to put way, way, way too much blame on the impact of renewables for its demise. Small impact yes from renewables. But GE's competition is not nearly in as dire of a situation as GE is.

So it's not TLOW or management or Oatmeal or JI or HR or blah, blah, blah. It's the fact that your customers don't want your product anymore. Even more so in Europe.
