Principals do the work in the lab. Directors don't. They are a dime a dozen.

I can sense everyone's frustration with how top heavy it is at Q. But judging from what happened in 2015, they will just lay off a few engineer/sr. engineer in each department, and call it a day. Don't expect any kind of overhaul in the upper management layer. It's just the way this company is.
Let's get rid of the VPs with 0 reports first. Most Principals for the exception of S.T. deserve their titles. Shell has 6 VPs, QC has ~ 300. WHY?
@fqm: are you talking about directors, Sr directors in QCA? I wonder how many Principals & above are needed just for integration of IPs.
There is no problem with numbers of Principals.
There is a BIG problem with directors; so many of them abounding around. At that level you NEED to add value. I see many who amble around the corridors and and dawdle through endless meetings.
