Mattel's Incoming Chairman Is Named to Replace Outgoing CEO

By Matt Townsend and Lucas Shaw

(Bloomberg) -- Mattel Inc. Chief Executive Officer Margo Georgiadis, who joined the toymaker from Google promising to overhaul the company, is stepping down and will be replaced by incoming Executive Chairman Ynon Kreiz.

Georgiadis, who is leaving to pursue a new opportunity in the technology sector, joined the company only 14 months ago. She will stay on in an advisory role at Mattel though May 10, the company said in a statement.Kreiz, who was already expected to become chairman of the board, will still stand for election for that position on May 17.

Unfortunately MGO has been the opposite of a role model for women. Proving she couldn’t take the heat after more than six months she started interviewing. Not exactly the qualities you want in a CEO.

After this Board blunder the lesson is not to hire a candidate solely based on gender. For Ynon he needs to carefully look at the hiring practices at all levels across the company. Placing a candidate in role dictated by gender requirements is not a culture of success.

Yeah but when it's pretty widely understood that your terrible CEO was hired specifically because she was a woman in an effort to project diversity and because it would make for such a fantastic puff piece in the business section about the tech leader mom leaned in and somehow managed to turn around the Barbie brand then it kind of does have at least a little to do with gender.

It has been all about leadership , not gender, facts are that numerous executive hires and promotions since 2014 have been disasters, those who hired them and let them proceed to bury Mattel are responsible. Glad MGO is leaving, unqualified from day one but given lottery winnings for absolute failure. Let that soak in for those in NYC and AG campuses losing their jobs. Mattel feels like it is deep in the grave, new leaders will be given a chance. But the situation appears very grave. Might just be too little too late. Employees saw the train wreck, but executives did not and did not make any plan other than to use business school cliches .

@SLyxnHn-1sfc Yeah and the pay gap, which is a myth, by the way, clearly didn't effect Mgo you idiot, she was all "Cash rules everything around me, C.R.E.A.M., get the money, dolla dolla bills y'all".

I agree, as if anyone would actually buy the idea that progressive feminist woman wouldn't be just as good at running a Fortune 500 company as businessmen. Its disgusting to even suggest.

Ok, let’s cut with the gender crap...this is about leadership and the abilities required to turn this company around, non of which she possessed, period!

That is the painful lesson, along with how little we got in return for her ludicrous compensation!

@SLyxnHn-1sfc I can tell you're a feminist because you used the anatomically correct term "vulva" rather than the colloquially excepted but incorrect term "vag!na" which technically only refers specifically to the birth canal not the external genitals.

the sopping vulvas that were running the company into the ground should go back to doing what they do best. make babies and destroy other companies. This the the exact reason why there’s a disparity in pay. inferior business acumen.

MGO had zero ability in assessing talent. The entire team are a bunch of leftovers. With her gone the MGO picked team will likely be shown the door or leave on their own.

Sounds like just a bunch of bitter, misogynistic losers talking crap. Sure, MGo was categorically and unambiguously a terrible CEO, and together with her predominantly female leadership team (heads of MEGA, FP, AG Barbie, Toy Box, pretty much all marketing leadership, the Australian woman etc.) she effectively pushed the company to the brink of ruin, but forget it was MEN who got the company into this mess it's in to begin with. It's men who are responsible, these women are being used as scapegoats like we always are. It's typical and I'm sick of it.

It’s sad that while we needed someone on our side we had a ceo who quickly decided this was too difficult and was looking out for herself. It’s all about character.

Interesting strategy - Be ceo of as many companies as possible staying only a year or two and collecting progressive golden parachutes. Stay in role just long enough to get bonus. Look for new job a few months into old. How does this person still have a job anywhere??? Worst hire. And yes knew that mattel would release some news right before quarterly results to distract. Par for course.

Think about this: her 2017 compensation was more than the combined salaries of the entire NYC office that she just closed down.

The writing was on the wall with her Groupon experience. Outside of Google where everyone succeeds, she has been a failure. Who is accountable from the Board for making such a dismal hire and pay package? Really bad!

I can't even fathom being able to drive a once thriving prominent American company into the ground, fire hundreds of people, close campuses and walk away from it all $31 million richer. What kind of conscience does a person like that have? And more importantly, WHY IS THIS ALLOWED?????

If it makes you feel any better, dollar for dollar she will be remembered as one of the worst CEO in the history of corporate America. Let's not forget Mattel stock was trading at around $30 a share when she took the reins a little over a year ago. What's it today $13.50 and falling?

Yup. Fire hundreds of people, then walk away with even more money. Keeping it classy.

MGO acquired her 2017 compensation to a 31 million dollar level, completed her taxes due on 4/17/18 , then bailed. Very methodical. Now severance of more millions. Go, just go , crawl back into the tech world hole with Mattel money while contributing to the ruin of a prominent American company .

You see why NOW, right? In a week, on April 26, Q1 results are announced. After market close, natch. There's zero good news to tell, so our BoD brings in a distraction. Lookie lookie at out shiny new CEO we got! Ynon will be hailed our saviour at the Q1 update. Lookie lookie, another new zero toy experience person! Google didn't work, so let's try Youtube! Sure our stock is down and dropping. We $uck and everyone knows it! Party hardy! Everybody have a free cup of Koolaid! Rock the house! Let's celebrate and close an American Girl distribution center in Wisconsin. Smell the coffee, people! Mattel is the evil empire and needs to burn to the ground. M-Ho sure did her part to ensure that will happen. Wonder how she'll destroy Ancestry.com.

She's going to Ancestry.com. She's already in place as their new CEO. Ancestry started their CEO search six months ago. Did MGo jump right in at that time??

“leaving to pursue a new tech opportunity”.... hmmm. Either she started job hunting almost as soon as she took this job or this is a nice way of saying she got canned.
