Thread regarding Qualcomm Inc. layoffs

Are you a Partner, or a Pawn?

Still at the Q? Time to ask yourself these questions:

1) Do you want to work WITH your company, or FOR your company?

2) Do you want them to do things WITH you, or TO you?

Based on he way this layoff was handled, it seems Q has made the full transition to treating employees like pawns, livestock, children not worthy or capable of understanding the big picture. It’s disrespectful to put EVERY employee into a constant state of panic, over and over. Also, they know that this will cause any remaining talent to start looking. Serious question, not being a jerk... Is there any remaining talent?

Irwin made a blunder by starting the Q in San Diego. It forced the Q to provide salaries in the high 90% compared to other local companies. This creates the golden handcuff effect. There is no mobility within the San Diego tech market, because there are so few other tech jobs here. If you have those golden handcuffs, you have few choices but to stick it out and continue to let Q bend you over, otherwise you and your family would need to pack it up and move to Silicon Valley in order to achieve a similar salary. Personally, I made the decision that the Bay Area was NOT for me. Then there are the H1B’s - you can’t blame them for wanting to make a fortune here, but Q takes advantage of the fact that they are captive and completely dependent on a work visa. Plus, their capacity for abuse is so much higher than “entitled Americans”.

Employees, Investors, Potential Acquirers... face it, the end is nigh for the Q. These are merely the death struggles you’re witnessing.

If QC ever decides to hire again, the only people they will be able to attract will be:

1) Too dumb do do any research;

2) Too desperate to care that the company is dying;

3) Looking for a quick buck before the party ends;

4) Low grade talent;

5) H1B’s;

6) ?

OP: you're so right.

"...the end is nigh for the Q. These are merely the death struggles you’re witnessing."

San Diego has a big problem: not much tech IR&D job created here mainly manufacturing, unfriendly market to 50+ workers and high living cost. The exodus from San Diego actually has started many years ago and will accelerate with this current QC layoff. Fortune favors the brave. Go to other cities people. The grass IS greener.

Objectively San Diego is way over rated as a place to live

I really dislike the landscape and scenery here although weather is good

I'd prefer a place with 4 distinct seasons

The only reason I am in San Diego is because I have a cushy job in Qualcomm with minimum of work and decent package

Of course the benefits are going down over time

I very well know that there are better places even in San Diego but because of inertia I am not making the move

I volunteered but didn't get accepted

I am an American citizen but was on h1b years back

I understand very well why Qualcomm or any other tech companies would love to hire h1b over Americans

I've made peace with my golden handcuffs. Q is a good place to work, much better than any ordinary company. Even if you consider only the "cool" tech companies, Q is right around the median when it comes to compensation and in the top 20% when it comes to benefits like healthcare, vacation and sick leaves. And San Diego has perhaps the best climate of any city on earth.

Also, I've never seen any difference in the way Q treats citizens versus H1B's. They have roughly the same salaries for a given level across the company (95k for engineer, 105k for senior and so on).

@kqt - No, I just think it’s a dirty, ugly, overcrowded place. Ridiculous traffic too. And I wasn’t willing to pay $1M for a small fixer upper in an old neighborhood. Every time I visited I wasn’t impressed. You make your own decisions, superstar. Clearly you’re smarter than everyone else. Good for you.

what do you mean by Bay Area was not for you? Do you mean you were not competent enough to survive there?
