Remember, folks - Irwin's original idea for Qualcomm was a company that was in the size range of '.... 100 people or less....'. Sooo, the current 'executive' team is simply executing a strategy to realize the founding idea. QC got as big as it did by necessity, if you will. It was necessary to demonstrate the viability of CDMA in handsets, and that worked. the base station group, the handset group, and ultimately QCT were components of that. Other than OmniTracs, the other things QC got into never panned out - MediaFlo, Globalstar, digital cimema....

Irwins mistake was paul.
Pet projects are ideas and investments. People invest in 100 of them, if one or 2 work out, they will get all the money back. Some times, they incubate the projects an then sell them to make money. CDMA was an idea once.
Sometimes I think the pet projects are something VPs do when they get bored. They never go anywhere. This is the 3rd large co I’ve worked for.
