Thread regarding General Electric Co. layoffs

Good predictions

I predict that GE Power and Renewables will be merged in order to take out an additional HQ. Some parts of the portfolio will be sold off such as Jenbacher and Waukesha as well as Rotating Machines part of Power Conversion and Industrial Solutions which GE has already indicated they want to sell in whole or part or are in the process of selling.

The trends around both High-voltage direct-current transmission lines to move renewable wind and solar power from remote parts of the US to population centers which consume it as well as distributed grids and home solar power along with energy storage ether via batteries or water dams will be key trends GE Power will need to pivot to.

Also, for Gas/ Steam they could pivot to creating more retro packages and others for the installed base to make as is plants run more efficiently which is similar to the strategy used after the 3 mile island nuclear incident for the nuclear part of GE Power.

Post ID: @S6ag6cg-1gdn: You forgot to analyze GE Nuclear. Has been a drag. No current or potential long term projects except selling fuel to few operating plants that are on life support.

I think GE should build a really big wind turbine. Bigger than anybody has ever seen. That would be so cool and solve all of GE's problems.

I see a big benefit for Power but not so much for Renewables. A better approach would be for GE Power to get their own act together. I think the problem is one of miscellany. GE Power is a conglomeration of a number of related businesses. But each business is rowing in a different direction. Digital is the glamorous startup. Gas/Steam turbines is the old grizzled buggy whip provider. Of course it doesn't help that Power Conversion is thrown in there as the odd man out.

The other problem is Alstom. Why did Immelt buy these guys. It would be nice to rewind the clock on that one. Maybe even Power Conversion too. We decimated Erie and Peterborough. Yet we bought in on motors again with PC. Same with drives. We got out of drives and then back in with ConverTeam?

To an extent Renewables is competing with Power Conversion so there may be some sense in Renewables picking up the pieces of PC that make the most sense. For example, we have the capability to develop power converters yet PC puts in ABB converters in their turbines.

Then there's GE A&C. This organization is hell-bent on destroying the MarkVIe control platform. And what is their replacement? Guaranteed there will never be a MarkVII.

I say let Russell figure it out. He needs to sink or swim and do it fast so we can all move on.

renewable wind and solar power from remote parts of the US to population centers which consume it

No need. Sure, it would be nice but it's clear that they'd just like to buy more WT's and run them at 1/2 power near the demand rather than trying to figure out the grid issues.

as well as distributed grids

No need. It might sound nice on a power point but no one needs GE to do that.

and home solar power

Tesla and china have GE beat. Sure it would be nice but if wishes were kisses....

along with energy storage

Tesla has you beat. Jeff "Too late" Imelt wasted all your time. That's over. GE lost.

ether via batteries or water dams

Batteries? GE lost that race ten years ago. Water dams? You really think there will be more water dams? Is someone going to build a big nuke plant and need peaking capability? Nope.

will be key trends GE Power will need to pivot to.

Nope. There's no pivoting. All the f------y above is just a has been's wishful thinking. These would have been plausible ideas ten or twenty years ago but not today. Too late. The cash you used to have to fund all that stuff is gone. No one on WS is going to approve a loan for GE to design the next solar cell or battery or water dam or... you name it. GE is the Kodak of power generation.

I predict union shops closing and mas quantities of work going to Europe because they just signed a 2 tier pay scale. Looks like Alstom will live

All I know is that I just saved 15% on car insurance by switching to gieco.
